Hi

This boating is one step forward one step back , having had trouble starting the engine at a remote anchorage and only got it going by using the decompression lever , the alternator was not charging the battery , then i read here that with a sail drive they put a relay in to turn off the alternator to take the load off the engine for starting, bypassed all that and the battery started so rules out alternator , phew , so must be relay removed it home for bench test its ok now head scratching on my bald patch,

back today and traced it to a sensor on bottom of engine under the starter motor where i suspect when replacing the sail drive seal they broke one cable off,(previous owner) this sensor

i cant even see it not to mind work on it my question what is it can it be removed with out oil coming out

any ideas please

Adrian

There is a relay that cuts out the alternator on a 1GM saildrive application as the additional drag of the saildrive can have an effect on starting. It is not fitted to shaft drive setups.

Don't have my factory workshop manual anymore as I have sold the engine, but seem to recall it was covered on an insert page. 1GM saildrives are rare beasts, but I am sure EP Barrus, the UK distributor will be able to give you the necessary information.

Also check the bulb for the charge light on the engine panel - if that's blown, then the alt probably won't charge. DAMHIKIJKOK...

well the rest of the story goes like this , the etap which is built for colder climates and conditions has this fitted which is very rare . in order to help starting when the oil is thick and cold in the sail drive and the engine has a temp sensor fitted to the oil sump which trips when the engine reaches temperature causing the relay to kick and the alternator to start charging this is to keep the load off the engine for the starting phase , the parts supplier has only ever seen one of these before and couldnt even find the part on his spares list , his advice is just to bypass all this which is as simple as plugging out of the loom and into the alternator. done and all is working fine , no starting problems ,

so thanks for your intrest in this thread

we live and learn
