1985 Nauticat 33

Hi guys,
I'm looking for some advice from people with a Nauticat or experience on one.
I'm thinking of buying a 1985 Nauticat 33.

I'm 21 and going to be predominantly sailing the boat alone with my dog, around the Great Barrier Reef to begin.
(Want something comfy to get him use to life at sea and be sun protected/have room for the family/room to grow veggies).

I know it's going to be slow but I don't want to have the motor on to sail all the time?
Is the corkscrew motion that terrible?
Is the boat capable of doing ocean crossings? Must be having come from Finland.
What is the average sail speed?
Any other advice/comments greatly appreciated

Pleione, if you have specific questions about the Nauticat 33 you could try asking them in the Practical Boat Owner forum here.
I am just wondering what attracted you to one of these vessels - they are more for temperate latitudes, with an enclosed wheelhouse, and no open cockpit.
And I would think that it would be quite nice to have an 'open' cockpit with a bimini awning to keep the sun off when you are cruising the Barrier Reef.
It would be worthwhile listing your priorities re what you want the boat to be capable of doing, deciding on a budget and maximum size, and then doing an 'advanced' search on Advanced Boat Search
Here you can also type in location, along with type of vessel (eg motor sailer, cruiser, cruiser racer..... the list is long).
And then hit 'search' and see what comes up.
if you have any questions about any boats that take your fancy, ask for opinions on this thread (and / or on the other thread in PBO if you start one there).

Depending on the type of engine and gearbox fitted. Free spinning the propeller when sailing can damage the gearbox over time. Since the oil circulation pump is on the input shaft, which will be stationary.
I'd recommend contacting the local dealers for the gearbox and asking them.

When I was looking at NC33's I was advised to look for a mark two version, the mark one has a wooden sub deck and wheelhouse which can be quite rotten. It will take time and money to repair, maybe more than the boat is worth in monetory terms.
Join the Nauticat Association as a guest and you will learn a lot about looking after one.
