I've recently (and not wholly of my own volition) become a part-owner of a boat powered by one of these.
It's a DT40, serial number starting 4001-10xxxx (not being coy about the whole number, I just can't remember it
).
My only previous experience of outboards is the small 2 or 4 hp kind used on tenders.
My mate who collected it saw it started and running smoothly, and on looking under the cover it all seems in good order to me, and pleasingly simple compared to something more modern (basically just a scaled-up version of my 4hp twin). Just a little surface rust on the outside of the lower cylinder head. The impeller was supposedly changed before the previous owner stored it last year.
I can't find a manual for it anywhere online (owner's manual or service manual). I've managed to find a spark plug spec (NGK B8HS with 0.9mm gap) as I wanted to keep a couple of spares on board, but that's about it.
I take it that a motor this size wouldn't use a shear pin? That's the other thing I'd normally carry as an onboard spare.
The previous owner said he ran it on 50:1, which seems about right to me and we'll do the same.
It's manual start and tiller steered, which suits the boat. No kill cord installed, but I've ordered one and the simple wiring harness appears to have the necessary connections.
I noticed a screw on the lower unit labelled "Flush" - presumably this undoes and a hose fitting goes in to avoid needing flush muffs. Anyone happen to know if it's a standard plumbing thread, or if it needs a special fitting?
Any general advice on care and feeding would be welcome, and if someone can point to a manual that would be great too.
Thanks,
Pete
