My (sailing) cruising buddy has emailed me regarding a power boat about which I know nothing . . .

I would be very grateful if someone can offer advice/opinions.

I have got back from Spain, more rubbish than good boats. I am trying to decide about the Powles 46. The problem is that the Volvo engines are obsolete and spares are not available. The engines are under the saloon floor, so I need to see how difficult it will be to change them. Can you please ask on the forum if anyone has experience of replacing the engines in the Powles 46. Is it straight forward or does it involve removal of part of the structure.
The problem with many of the boats from the 80's early 90's is that the engines are no longer produced. For some spares are still available whilst others are not.

The engines in question are twin 1978 Volvo Penta TAMD 70 C with about 4300hrs on them. The boat is on at €59,000.

My friend is a very experienced sailor with lots of sea miles under his belt but a relative novice when it comes to motor boats.

TIA

If its the boat i think it is, it has been up for sale since the dawn of time.
Far to much money for an ancient relic, even as a spacious livaboard.
Only very dubious semi-economic course of action would be to check engines are basically sound and repair/mend/replace super expensive bits such as heat exchangers/ risers etc with aftermarket parts from specialist companies as and when they fail .
Personally think somebody will be doing the seller a big favor by buying boat.
What about the hull survey costs inc lift out ?
Boat would need to be bought at fraction of that asking price ?.

5 years ago I Re engined a powles 46 , removed the 70c and fitted a pair of good used Tamd61A s . A very interesting project , the boat is in Southampton and I'm sure the owner may show you my work should you wish.
Owner posted on here so have a search , titled something like " bringing an old boat back to life , poster is Andydent 2000
From memory .

Many thanks - I'll pass the info on.

My friend lives mainly in NZ but follows the summer & thus has a boat in both the N&S hemispheres.

He's currently over here actively looking for a mobo to replace the N.Hemisphere SY he's just sold.

There was real peach of a boat moored down in Sandwich recently with everything done, both interior and mechanical.
The whole 9 yards over recent years.
Very much tempted....... but simply too big.
Owner was very motivated to sell, would even consider a smaller P/X after it surfaced on Ebay.
Price was not vastly more than the Spanish fixer upper.
Boat vanished from the listings probably because nobody would pay the money, might still be around ?

Sorry - was that a Powles 46?

Edit: OK found it on the web. Says under offer.

Many thanks for the pointer.
