1965 Mercury Lower Unit on \'74 motor?

I can pick up a 1965 Mercury 500 (50HP) completely rebuilt cheap. But, i want to know whether it will fit on my 1974 Mercury 500?? Thanks a million, mates.

Ask Mr grubbs at Grubbs marine, www.oldmercs.com. In US, but reply to emails in 48hrs or so. He knows all this stuff. Also loads of US merc forums. I bet the answer is yes. If the newer motor were late 70s it wouldn't but an early 70s is same as '65 I bet. Good luck
