15/40 engine oil

What safeguards are there to ensure that what is in the container actually meets the specification printed on it?

Last year I crossed the Channel from the Solent to Cherbourg and had to motor almost the whole distance. Two days before setting off I had changed the oil on my old BUKH engine and fitted a new filter. For the first time, and in an attempt at economy, instead of refilling with one of the major brands of oil that I have used in this engine for the last 16 years, I bought Asda's own brand; (same spec as the expensive ones).

I checked the oil level again before leaving but a couple of hours from Cherbourg the oil pressure alarm sounded. I shut down and checked the oil level and found it had fallen below the bottom of the dipstick. I topped it up and carried on. This engine has never done this before.

When I got to Cherbourg I replaced the Asda oil with Shell oil. For the rest of the cruise of several hundred miles, I only needed to top up about half a cupful.

Science or no science, in future I'm not going to risk wrecking my engine to save twenty or so quid a year.
