With a possible move from the marina to a swing mooring next season we're looking at replacing things that can't be powered off shore power.

Can anyone recommend a good 12v vacuum cleaner please?

Another Black & Decker user. We don't use it often - prefer dustpan and brush when possible - but have had the B&W for a few years now and it works really well.

I like that it doesn't require a new bag or filter - you can take the existing one out and bash it clean.

PS. I used to clean a hotel and they provided me with a "Henry" which was excellent and had no bag or filter required. I moved on to different employment but my first domestic vacuum cleaner purchase was a Henry. That was ~15 years ago now. Still going strong. Never bought a single bag or filter for it. People sometimes show me their new Dyson plastic fantastics with pride and I smile patronisingly. Had to use a Dyson once. Yack!

The B&D must be a truly fearsome beast ..... you have to be over 18 to buy it :D (any sensible suggestions WHY?).

It also clearly states FOR AUTOMOTIVE USE ONLY so you are all being terribly naughty using it on boats, even if you are over 18.

12v Vacuum cleaner

Most domestic vacuum cleaners are around the 1000watt power rating. So it stands to reason that the kind of power you can get from a 12v vacuum cleaner is going to be quite limited. ie 100 to 200 watts. It is nice that some people think a particular sort is good. Perhaps some designers can get a bit more efficiency out of their 12v design but in the end I think you will be disappointed with a low powered one. Use an inverter on the old vacuum cleaner (the brush type motor should be OK on any waveform) or just do the cleaning when you have mains power available. good luck olewill

Have had a Morphy- Richards which looks dreadfully like the WAECO. But nowhere near the price. Has been on board each for years now.

Can be charged from the mains, with phone type charger, or charged from the 12v supply on board.

Very useful around the house when doing odd jobs, clearing up drilling dust or wood chips etc.

Bit bigger and more effective than the hand held models - and it will suck up water.
