12v to 230/240v inverter

I thought a DC to DC PSU had to convert to AC to be able to step the voltage up. How else do you do it?
I.e. convert to AC, put through a step-up transformer, then convert back to DC.

Running off 12v dc is more efficient than going up to 240v then back down.

Though there is always something you want to run from 240v so handy to have onboard anyway.

I have a small 240v AC/12v DC TV on board that works fine but I have now added a simple DVD player that only runs off 240v AC supply. I am thinking of using an AC/DV invertor to power the DVD when at anchor or when there is no 240v AC available. Would a 300w invertor be sufficient for this purpose ? I have 2 x 110 A/Hr domestic batteries so feel they should be able to survive an average length film on the DVD.

I use the DVD player in my laptop and output the VGA to the TV. Saves having a separate DVD player and it's power supply.
