12v GPS Module For Input to VHF

I’m looking for a small, cheap 12v module with antenna that will provide a data position input to my Icom IC-m421 DSC VHF.

I'm happy to connect and wire this myself. Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions as to the sort of thing I can use? Are the sort of £16 modules that are sold on Bang any good?

Good question, I've been wondering the same thing, not for a fixed radio but for a non gps tablet.

I would use something like this:

I've used the U blox modules in commercial stuff, it's at least well documented.
You might have to do a little programming to get the right baud rate and sentences.

There are various packaged versions on ebay.
When you design a proper product using those ceramic gps antennas, you 'tune' the antenna to match the amount of metal it's sat on and the amount of plastic that's covering it. This can make a huge difference.

I used a BU353 GPS module, there is the usual USB version, but also a PS version which is serial: just cut the round connector and use the three wires to connect to the radio. Power must be 5v, I wired a 7805 voltage regulator.
It's a small antenna, mine sits inside the boat, behind the instrument panel next to the VHF, no long cables to run (at least with a plastic boat).

BTW I also use the USB version for one onboard PC.

Oooo not sure about £16 but mine cost £15.50 and is totally fine ?

I’ve literally just installed one into my AIS but same thing as for a VHF. Works really well. It just leads up to a Window or portlight and sticks on the glass.

When I look at the gps statistics in my AIS software or on the plotter then it seems to outperform the expensive Raymarine version up in my arch.

Just as a note I already have a gps chip in my ais unit but it kept dropping out. The manufacturer told me that GPS signals had changed last year and some thing call rollover meant some gps chips couldn’t handle it. So they said plug in a small external antenna and that one mounted inside against a window would be more than accurate enough for AIS.

Be aware that this is just an 'Antenna' - his radio will need a complete GPS antenna & receiver that outputs NMEA 0183 data similar to the item that Paul R mentioned earlier.

Any of the small modules that you can get for less than a fiver should do the job ( for example HERE ) .
These are fairly generic, and typically put out NMEA at 9600 baud.
I scavenged one (V.KEL) from a dead car satnav that I use with OpenCPN .. you might need to add a voltage regulator for a couple of pennies.
