As the title suggest I'm looking for a small TV, the basic spec' I'm looking for is:
Full HD
Not worried about 3D, unlikley to use 3D.
HD Freeview receiver terrestrial, not likely to use Freesat
Run off a stabilized 12volt supply
Small, a 16" would do, but I could go up to 20"+
Not worried about a DVD drive
I need to be able to mount it on a bulkhead
I've had a search around the world wide web, but don't seem to be able to find a small 12volt TV to fit the spec, there seem to be plenty of big ones (40" and over) but no small TVs with full HD and built in HD Freeview.
Has anyone found one that works OK on a boat?

I bought one from kogan. There are two or three other makes. Kogan provided an excellent service, its been trouble free and runs happily from the 12v dc supply without any stabilisation. The display is very good. I have it hooked up to a Travvision as well which provides sky underway.

I notice the picture being better with a HD display.

With the kogans i might think about the position of the dvd drive. Mine is built in so access is not possible. Its not an issue if you connect a drive to the onboard pc, but worth thinking about.

Ps the kogan has numerous ports - worth a thought as in my case it was also convenient to hook it up to the computer using a hdmi connection.

Cello TV

I have bought a 19" version from the following supplier:

http://www.tv-village.net/cello-c16117dvb-156-12-volt-tv-p-94.html

Mine has a DVD player but the one above is without. They were very helpful in choosing which one. They provide a stabilsed 12v supply adaptor with the tv as well a mains adaptor. The tv will also record on a timer to a usb stick as well as play movies etc. back from the stick. It can also use the usb to pause live tv!

I think it covers most of what you require.

We have a Kogan, which I'm pleased with for the price. Runs direct off 12V through a 12V socket. However, whilst the screen is HD, the Freeview tuner is not HD. I have not seen any small, 12V TVs that have Freeview HD tuners.

Why not just buy a mains set - they're a lot easier to find and then use a small mains invertor? Ring, Sterling etc produce 75-100watt models for £20 or so which are small and efficient. (You can then also use for charging phones, laptop, etc etc.)

VicMallow, on board, I use an Ican Freeview HD set top box and a 22" Acer LCD HD PC monitor and the difference between the SD channels and the HD versions is very noticeable.

I have had two TVs now - one from PC World and another from Tesco.

Very rarely are they advertised as 12v - in fact, many shop assistants are likely to give a strange look if you ask for that!

Besr way is to go to, say, Tesco, Currys, PC World, etc and look for TVs on display with the power brick - then you can see if it is a 12v supply.

I have a Cello 22'' comes with built in DVD which I know you don't want but handy when in a poor signal area.Has freeview as well. Runs faultlessly on the boat 12v system. Not quite sure if it's full HD however. My eyes aren't full HD anyway. Anyway very popular with Caravan brigade.

Whenever I've considered a tv on board, I've been concerned about the constant bashing it would get under sail. Doesn't that cause problems for tv's intended for static domestic environments?

I checked this one out, it says HD ready, so I guess the Freeview isn't HD.

I've found that the picture quality on HD is far better, the laptop I'm using to type this has an HD screen and it's much better than my old one which doesn't. I'm also looking to "future proof" the TV I can see that moor and more content will be available in HD format, so the logic (if there is any!) is to buy the best available at the time and hope it doesn't become redundant to quickly.

My 23" Samsung lasted from 2006 to 2010, and was still going strong when I sold the boat. UK to Malta and back involved more than a few rough moments :)

We have this Kogan TV:

We've had it for about a year now and I'm pretty happy with it. The sound from the built-in speakers is pathetic, however we have it wired up to our boat stereo. The TV uses very little power and the viewing angles aren't too bad, for the price. The screen's max res is 1366X768 so somewhat "poor man's" HD, but seeing as it's only 19" it's acceptable. The FreeView works but is only standard res. I don't think I've seen any TV's of this sort with built-in FreeView HD tuners.
The built-in DVD player is also useful. The DVD drive is only powered up when the input is set to DVD so it really does use as little power as possible, which is very nice.

All in all, a decent TV for the price, and if it were damaged through bad weather, you'd simply get a new one.

I have a 19" Hitachi TV/DVD from Argos bulkhead mounted in mine, it doesn't have Freeview HD, but it is HD ready for other input sources. As mentioned, unless you're sat up very close to the screen I don't think you'll notice the difference...my 40 year old eyes certainly can't.

Cables have been routed behing the bulkhead since the pic was taken. Runs off 12v and cigarette lighter cables are available on Ebay for about a tenner:

LG tvs are 240/12 volt. We have the LG M2252, 22", full HD, IPS LED screen. External hard drive plugs straight into the back and plays automatically. Not sure about Freeview as we bought it in Greece and we don't use it as a tv receiver. Excellent little tv with good sound and picture.
