12v Cigarette socket is blowing my phone charger(s) - why ?

Just assume it matters on anything that is more complicated than an incandescent light bulb and you will not go far wrong.
That includes an LED light bulb by the way, as the nature of a Light Emitting Diode is it won't work the wrong way around.

ITYWF that although discrete LED are polarity sensitive LED lamps may not bet because, quoted from Boatlamps website, "they are fitted with a diode bridge rectifier and can therefore be connected either way without damage. "
