Hi there guys,

well go on then,
what is the considered lenght of chain required?

For pye fleet creek?

For Essex waters, estuary?

For sitting fishing?

for sitting off harbours?

well thats about all eventualities.

kind regards,
Les.

Depends on conditions.

Rule of thumb I grew up with was use 3 x HW depth (chain) in good conditions for overnight. If lots of boats about might put an angel down the chain to reduce swinging.

If weather is looking dodgy then increase to 5 x.

Lunch stop - falling tide - enough to hold you. Rising tide + a bit! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's about 35m in real money - good for about 10m water depth in nice weather and 5m in bad weather. We have 25m chain and 50m anchorplait and count that as enough for round here.

We have another 50m of three strand deep in the cockpit locker for when we go round the corner to where you can see through the water (but have never had to use it)

200ft of chain should cope with most situations, plus another 50ft chain and 150ft rope for the kedge.

If you carry a storm anchor you may wish to carry specific chain for it in case you have to dump the main anchor.

If you are not using it anchor chain makes wonderful Xmas decorations.

If the weight is a problem B and Q sell some very nice white plastic chain that looks very much like the real stuff.

Hi there,
Thanking you all for your help and views.

I found this on the Navigators and general site.
***************
How much line do I need?

The generally accepted stance on how much line to deploy is 3-4 times the depth of water you are in for chain, and 6-8 times depth for warp.

Remember though to check the tidal range where you are and allow for the maximum possible depth. In rough weather line out use up to 10 times the maximum depth of water. Remember ‘if in doubt let it out’; your line or chain will do more good on the seabed than in your locker.

Navigators and general should know what an insurance company would expect.

Interesting?

kind regards,
Les.

I carry 30m of chain plus a load of rope. Have usually found the chain is sufficient round the East Coast.

Depends partly on a load of other factors such as size of boat; trim; size of arms; availability of windlass etc., ability to sleep.
