10hp Outboard (Yamaha or Mercury)

I am choosing between a 9.9hp Yamaha & 10hp Mercury Outboard for my RIB, can anyone tell me which could be a better choice?

I would definitely go for Yamaha. Based on nothing more than observations around the marinas (ie. very popular) and a positive comments I've heard about them.

It's worth checking the power to weight ratios and such, but in all Yamaha would be my favorite.

I suggest you compare the detailed technical specs of the two to determine if either has any features more appropriate to your needs.

Consider the difference in weight.

Consider the dealers locations compared with your location.

Which can you get the best deal on.

No interest in a Mariner?

I've had a rotten experience with a Yamaha 5hp and certainly wouldn't buy another one. Its been back to the dealers several times but invariably when I want to use it - it doesn't go. Spent a fortune on fresh petrol , new plugs, servicing etc. and it might work the first time when I get it back, but 24 hrs later - as bad again.

I think most of the mainstream engines will offer good service, unless you are unlucky. A local dealer who offers good service is probably more important.

Have you considered a 15hp variant? as these are normally the same cc & weight (I believe 10hp is the limit allowed on American lakes, so these could be considered de-tuned 15hps)

We used to have a 15hp Yamy (traded up to 150 yamaha now :-) )I think it was just the unrestricted version of the 9hp, have always been happy with performance of both the 15 & 150. No real experience of Mercs so can't compare, but vote of confidence with the "bigger" yamaha's (i.e not 2/3hp - we use a battered Mariner for that)...

4 stroke?
in mag review,..mariner was top (same as mercurey, just the badge I think.
Yam was heavy and pricey.

Does anyone knows if there is a Fresh Water Flush Plug on the 9.9hp Mercury Outboard?
I was thinking this it would be good if I could connect a hose to flush salt and dirt from the engine waterways.

One is shown in the "component location" diagrams in the owners manual but only flushing with muffs over the water intakes appears to be described in the body of the manual.

they were testing them on a 3.1m walker bay mini rib.
Merc was top, then Honda.. think they also did Tohatsu,Suzuki, Yam and a two stroke Tohatsu as a comparison.
Trouble is, its hard to judge the score when price is part of the equation.. I mean if you can get a cracking deal on one of them, would it put you to the top !
Merc and Tohatsu are the same , other than Tohatsu is cheaper, and a few more plastic bits. Honda was quietest,Yam was a few kilos more in weight. In reality, its all small differences, I think.
Hope that helps
