Personally know of very few places that land is as much as 10miles away - even in the middle of the channel it is only about 60m to the nearest land!

I found it a psychological thing to overcome at first. If you are safe 2nm off land, then you are just as safe 200nm offshore. Provided that is that you aren't planning to rely on other people's help to get you out of trouble.

Ah, but then almost everybody does don't they.

Interesting poll results. Hundreds of views, but few votes, the majority of which are in the offshore group. Makes me wonder if all the others just keep quite about being coast hoppers or river dwellers.

Actually, you are a lot safer 200nm offshore, than within 5nm of the coast. Seas are not as steep and not so many rocks!

done a 1000 miles of shore! When we got to within 200 miles of Uk we were jumping up and down with excitment cos we were nearly home! a long way off shore is all relative.
