As promised piccie of Symphony's lower parts. As you can see evrything wrong - shallow keel, saildrive and spade rudder, how dare they! However sils beautifully and motors backwards very well.

I got 12 knots out of a 30'er with about 24' waterline length .... admittedly there was one wave at the pushpit and one at the pullpit .... oh and full sail in 25 knots broad reach ... I think that can technically be called surfing though ..

The Bav34 is 35' long. if the ratio is about the same as ours then the LWL will be about 33' which gives 7.7 knots theoretical hull speed - as we know, hull speed can be pushed beyond that, it just takes a lot more power - so 8 knots is certainly possible - given the right wind conditions.

Given the right wind conditions...... I seem to remember that the wind instrument was showing only 13 knots. True or apparent, this is all the result of the OP's morale boosting overtuned speedo...... just like we had in the old minis, when 80mph was really only 70! but sounded like 80.

I have a stange annomoly on my Oceanlord, in that when on starbord tack hard on the wind, flat sea and 15knt true, I can get 8.9knots, and port tack only 7.5, (which has shown to be the correct speed in colab with the GPS. I can only presume that when heeled, there is an increaseed waterflow over the starboard side of the area just to front of the keel, though why I couldn't possibly say.

Sounds as if you'r getting great fun from your sailing whatever the log reads.

Even though I was onboard, I was not able to see the log on my Twister when she was at her fastest down a huge wave halfway back from Cherbourg 4 years ago.
Whilst I had been in the cockpit earlier and witnessed 10knots through the water, I was trying to get some R&R up in the forepeak when two of my crew screamed out '13!!'
Up in my little nest it felt more like 113 as the noise and crashing was deafening.
Experience has shown that we were carrying far too much sail but she still felt safe even so.

Well I managed 12 knots in my Bennie 331 last week ... but that was surfing down waves off the Lizard ... the bum was a bit dirty or I think I could have managed more .. my record so far is 16 knots in a F7 in Christchurch Bay.

Lucky you fixed the wobbly rudder then!

I saw 11.5 kts on the GPS this summer, in 25kts from the beam.
Not bad for a Contessa 32 and quite enough for me.

Saw 18 knots off Cap de la Hague on GPS - 10 knots of tide, flat calm, and 8 knots of engine....... beat that!

I had over 21 knots on the GPS close to the Cap de la Hague in a F1 apparent of which only 6 were coming from the engine .. big spring tide

Cos it peed with rain most of the day and as you know Greek cranes don't work in the rain. Something to do with the rules that all crane drivers must wear shades when operating cranes!

10 knots in flat water! time to calibrate your log?

It's possible, you know - slipstreaming a container vessel for instance....

I think we'll ask him for the GPS reading next time.... a bit less controversial, methinks.

DOnt kid yourself. Your log is overreading by at least one knot, as can be seen by comparison to the SOG on the GPS. Also the maximum hull speed is probably about 7.3 knots without surfing.

Reading some of the negative comments on here has made me re-visit my original post.

Yep, I did say flat water... but I meant that generally in relation to the video. The 10 knot reading was acheived surfing off some big bugga's just as we cleared The Race. As we got into the shelter of the Peninsula the seas calmed down but there were still some nice waves which if caught correctly produced the 8+ knots mini-surfs.

Nothing to do with waterline length but I really didn't think the post was going to be so dissected otherwise I would have been much more precise.

As for the SOG comments ... good grief ... WE WERE AGAINST THE TIDE. I even put that at the end of the vid. But I do agree that when not surfing we were well into the 7's not 8's.

Why is that kidding myself?

Here's a SOG we achieved earlier ... going DOWN The Race ... but I suppose someone will be along to take issue with that reading

10 knots in a Bav34 is definitely possible. Our record of 11.5 on a log which is accurate at 6.5kn but tends to overread at higher speeds was achieved with a force 6 on the quarter, in company with a Bav 34 which was going slightly faster than us, having a longer waterline.

Recorded maxima from logs can be misleading sometimes due to glitches, and we have recorded over 90 knots on our log from time to time though it seems unlikely that we got very near that on the water.
