Just returned from summer cruise...surely the worlds best cruising grounds "Scotlands west coast" After home port of Troon did Arran, Sanda, Gigha, Jura, Shuna, Seil, Easdale(cheated and took ferry, £1.40 return) Eilean Mor Mccormaigs, Ardmore Isles Islay, Bute.......all in near perfect weather and wind apart from second stop at Sanda in forecast variable F3 that became NE7!!! not to be recommended.

Beat that on the Solent!

Paul.

Hi Donald,
Nearly stopped Tighnabruach Sat afternoon but as I dropped the hook off the lifeboat station the "Waverly" disembarked about 10,000 punters ashore, looked more like Sauchihall street on a Saturday!! upped anchor and headed for the east kyle in what turned in to a great beat all the way to Rothsay.

Well done, sounds great. Is Eilean Mor the one that belongs to the SNP? I asked a lady SNP cooncillor recently what they needed an island for. I thought it might be for them all to go and live on when they finally wake up to themselves.

Must have passed you then. I was racing from Rothesay to Tarbert on Saturday. Fine day!

Its best to keep clear of Tighnabruaich when the Waverly's in. For some reason only known to themselves the shopkeepers all shut their doors.... happened for years.

You KNOW we can't beat that in the overpopulated, overpriced, brash Solent Paul; wish I was back up there with you. You're just trying to wind me up! Welcome back.

Alistair,

I took this picture at Eilean Mor in the MacCormaig Islands on Saturday 24th July. Any idea what the building is? SNP headquarters, perhaps?

We actually thought it was the new Scottish parliament building with the money that had been lavished on it...the flag and pole were not evident the night we stopped.

the variable f3 which became a ne7, wasn't on monday 2 aug by any chance, we were heading from carlingford lough to ardglass, our forecast was sw 3/4, which soon swung around and became ne7/8, when we were passing dundrum bay, just south of ardglass. we arrived safely at ardglass, not a day to be forgotten to quickly, reminds you of the margins of safety that we sail in...

Just finished 2 week sail went to Ardfern, Jura, Gigha, Gigalum, Sanda, Loch Ransa, Barmore , Otter Spit, Menard, Holy Isle and back to Troon
Rained for nearly 60 hrs non stop, typical weather for Scotland but great sailing and scenery
Best food was sea food pie at Jura Hotel and sea food at Otter Spit, best walks were to Jura House, Sanda, around Castle Lachlan and Holy Isle (had lemon and ginger tea)
Met resident bird warden on Sanda, look him up, he lives in the boat house when on the island, very interesting talk about Shearwaters and Storm Petrols

I think that building IS the new parliament - for the soon-to-be declared Republic Of Scotland. The SNP is planning a departure from the UK along the lines of Taiwan / China, they will set up on the island, and live well on the income generated by selling "their" oil.
This will happen just as soon as they finish the play-ground squabble over whose turn it is to be leader this week.
I like them. They're funny. I might volunteer to be their navy.

Were you the owner of the Najad which was anchored in Sanda for a couple of nights? Sheena and I came ashore for a pint when one was there. Had just taken delivery earlier in the year?

Terry,

You get all the weather you deserve, that's what becomes when you can hide away in your Najaad cockpit covers!!! You will certainally have to improve your MSL to cairn time for Mullach More though, guess you need more than lemon tea to help you along!!!! See you soon

Paul.

Yes that was us, we had a great time, how about you, where did you get to?
Terry

Sorry just read earlier threads about your trip, got confused as Starboard always seems to be sticking his oar in, can't stand these sailors who don't like anchoring!

One question about Sanda anchorage - it says in the CCC Sailing Directions that there are rocks in the middle of the anchorage. I didn't see any, and that was on a rising tide. Where exactly are they - in relation to where you were anchored?

Did you stay in Sanda another night?

Thought the pub was great - but the owner was on a bit of a downer!

Donald,

The rocks are indeed there the best time to see them is LW springs but they are further to the east than both shown on the chart and described in the sailing directions. If you speak to Richard whom owns the island he would confirm that. I will however confirm having spent 4 nights anchored there this year that in a strong North wind the cross tide seems to stop any fetch coming into the anchorage, however should ther be any east in the wind at all the swell can be quite bad and uncomfortalble, having suffered a NE F7 last week unforecast I can confirm it is very unpleasant but my good old Delta did the trick....

P.S. Terry on "Angelique" was anchored both S and E of the rocks.

Regards

Paul."In Dreams"
