£40 per mile...

Calculate the cost per day spent on board - it should be a bit more palatable./quote]

£366 per day.

Errmm - no, I don't think that will help /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

£5500 at £366 per day = 17 days

You're right, it doesnt make sense!

Mind you... I always said I wouldnt want to own a boat until I could live on it.... For 30 years, I managed to sail almost anytime I wanted as crew.

£4800 and 550 miles plus daysailing = less than £8 a mile /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Enjoyment per £ = immeasurable /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

... and I'll bet you've not added in all those pleasurable hours spent antifouling and cursing the diesel engine in the early spring.

I'm of the "if you need to justify the expense then you need another hobby" school. What else is money for anyway?

I count every second on board as a bonus, whether moving or not, and whether doing "work work" or not.

You did not try for your annual cruise during the first 3 weeks of July 2007, otherwise you would not say this.

MMM! Have to admit that I didnt see a drop of rain between June and late September .... even so, I just love being on the boat, even if it's chucking it down outside.... which it has done several times with a vengeance since arrival Malta!!

but can you capitalise any of the purchases this year? or you could put them in as a prepayment - after all, you've got a tank of diesel that you've paid for but have not had the benefit of yet.... and I'm sure you've bought a bottle or two that are just sat there waiting consumption ... any extra toys you've bought? replaced any rigging? (running or otherwise - these will last a number of years) ...

Sadly, the figure doesn't include any gadgets - just insurance, berthing, lift in/out, engine repairs and a lot of other repairs/servicing. Oh, and fuel/marina electrickery.

Don't do the maths bit.
(I know you feel the need)

Just answer the question. "Can I afford £5500 per year?"

If Yes, carry on
If No, sell boat

If you didn't spend the money on your boat, you would only waste it.

Just enjoy and forget the money aspect.... you can't take it with you... can you....?

Hmm, it's a thought. I pay about 50 sheets a month for gym membership, and swim a km 3 to 5 times a week, say average 4 = 200km, or about 125 miles. for 600 quid, that's nearly a fiver a mile!!!!!!!!

It's all a question of self discipline. Although I work in HR, I have managed to wean myself off various bad habits and no longer go around interviewing boats when I want a new one..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know it was just a statement at the start, but you did ask a question.

How many days do you get on the boat in a normal year? or was this year as normal as any other year i.e. 17 days +/-

If this is the case, how many days do you get on a nice charter boat for £5,500 plus the interest on the value of the boat, (if you sold it)?

Boat share? 4 summer months = 120 days, an eighth share = 15 days, plus what you can use during the rest of the year.

Not ideal, but costs reduced massively, and you've still got a boat to nip down to if noone else is using it.

Just a thought, and I know at least one person that this works for, (which I know is not a representative sample ).

Richard,

you make some good points.

There's not much data to go on, as this is only our second full year of boat ownership. IIRC, we spent about 32 days on board last year - only about half that this year. But this year's sailing was badly affected by the weather, mechanical problems and domestic/employment issues, so I hope it is atypical.

I know boat ownership is something no sane, rational person would do. I guess I'm just suffering from a bit of "End of a poor season" grumpiness... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
