How much would a custom-built wooden boat cost? More than steel? Less?

Hi boz,

I Saw a brand new custom built Bristol Pilot cutter around 45' , in wood ready to go including all extras and sails etc, £259k.

That makes fantastic value, comparing it to Tupperware boat of about 10mtrs.:)

Grp plastic is very nasty in comparison.

straying from the spec but have you considered a fairline targa 48 - cracking boat 6 proper berths and loads of deck space. great with children as no stairs to negotiate, and you can keep the tender out of site. they still look great and go like a stabbed rat.

Yup - very classy. And relatively excellent value.

(Too expensive for me by a factor of 10, though - but there you go :))

Hey Boz,

You can build your own steel boat for peanuts. I built a 18mtr *4mtr barge for about £6k for steel, ford transit engine/ gearbox £2.5k, paint £2k....total including floors and home made galley about £12k.

It cruises at 6kts At 2800 revs; but it does weigh 30 tons including ballast.

So it should be possible to build a sea boat for a little bit more.

Look at George Beulher designs, diesel duck displ. Boats.:)

We'd value your opinion if you actually read the original request, and had something helpful to say that was even vaguely within the required parameters.

e.g. It could be a Flybridge Sailing Yacht ??? :p

It's true, you have had a sense of humour by-pass haven't you?

BTW, I'm NOT having a go, I cannot offer advice, but I thought I may just raise a smile. Maybe you used them all up on Scuttlebutt?

Now now, there's no need to be overly sensitive to even the mildest & most innocuous comments: just suggest a suitable boat :)

Sorry Searush but I'm with Flower Power on this. You have a habit of posting what you think are droll comments on mobo threads which you think are funny but nobody else does. The OP asked a very reasonable and specific question and I think that question deserves some respectful replies

I had a T48 in my first season in the Med in 2003. Yes it has 3 cabins and yes it goes well but I sold it after just one season. I got really fed up fighting with the huge canopy and whilst the relatively narrow beamed hull means the T48 goes well, it also means the hull rolls more at anchor and that is an important point in the Med where boats spend a lot of time at anchor. My T48 wasn't new but it suffered some infuriating and what I thought were unacceptable build quality issues for a boat of it's age as well. Then we get into the old argument of sports cruiser v flybridge which I'm not going to get into here but suffice to say, my view is that f/b boats make better Med boats than sports cruisers

I looked at a T48 when I sold my T34 and echo what Mike has said, having had an SC and now a FB in the Med, whilst I miss the fun of the SC occasionally, I do prefer a FB - must be an age thing.

Jez, have you considered an F43? Although with your budget I reckon you could pick up a nice F42/5 as per my previous post, have you spoken to Hurric. yet?

its ironic that he really has a bit of a hissy fit if you dare to disagree with him on scuttleberks.
