    Freedom Yacht anyone

To Down West from Further Down West;) I vaguely remember the Frenchman, he was there every time I sailed and was I think a co-owner of the boat or was interested in a half share because Hems asked me if I wanted a half share. His health problem made it a bit hard for him, although such an easy...

    Freedom Yacht anyone

Re post #50. The dutch chap was Hems Kalis, a retired member of the family Dredging company Boskalis. I sailed with him a couple of times in his Freedom 40, but lost touch with him when I moved to work in Lisbon nearly 30 years ago. His house was on a ridge just outside Albufeira and I remember...

Repeated topics of conversation and debates

My father always said "Read the question before answering" and as Captain Fantastic said "some of the topics" he did not "forget" any of them. The menace of jet skis is really covered by "motorboats antagonising sailboats" although I seem to remember another thread asking if jet skis are...

    Forumite needs some help.

It is and a wonderful place for sailing. Had to give up SB20 sailingnwhen I got too old and if on the helm usually finished up to leeward when tacking or gybing due to less balance skills. As the only one in the fleet over 70 I had to decide to "grow old gracefully" instead of pretending I...

    Toponomastics in UK waters

Bit of a drift, but between Portugal and Spain in the south is the Rio Guadiana, which means river, river, river! The phoenicians came and called it "ana" meaning river, then came the moors, hearing it called ana then called it the "wadi" ana then the Portuguese decided to call it the Rio Quadiana.

Should rafting be a thing of the past in Lymington?

The answer has already been given in post #16 - in a beautifully delicate manner!

    Katabatic winds

Not sure if it is a true katabatibc wind, but if you have been in Cascais for some time you will know that we often get strong winds all night, which pick up about 18.00.

    HR Rassy 35/Nab 35?

Yes, I brought a Nab 35 back from Sweden over 40 years ago, much more familiar with the HR42 the owner subsequently bought. We really only had to sail downwind, when she went quite well, as plenty of heavy boats do. The HR needed top end F4 to beat well and I suspect the Nab 35 would be the same.

    OK I'll do a where is I

The railway runs below the road, the box section might look small but it is not, there is space for two tracks. The Railway was always planned but only put there 30 years after the opening of the bridge, which was designed take the weight of the railway, but had to have a second set of cables...

Can you remember the first sail you ever had and what in

So many similarities with others, but I suppose when we (now 76) were young there were far fewer classes of dinghy. Swallows and Amazons started my interest. I first sailed a couple of times in an early Enterprise (307) I think at Barnt Green then I think I sailed in her again at the Solway...
