I thought it was the lift you get from the current when beating? Sometimes when the wind is in a certain direction it will lift your bow into the wind helping you point??
I'm probably wrong about that.
From the Dorus Mhor to Pladda.
Two engine failures ( in two different boats.)
One cruising chute over the side.
One snapped genoa halyard shackle, with genoa over the side.
One close encounter with a rabid, mad, erratic creel boat.
Lost favorite hat overboard.
The last one was the worst.
I had my boat out the water and in bits last winter so she's staying in and in more or less one piece this winter.
I'm going to pick my weather and get out for some short trips and am looking forward to some more clear, cold , crisp, quiet trips in the coming months.

I've got a GPS 550 running whatever Garmin run and the Memory map app with their charts running on the iPad. ( along with the excellent Antaries charts) also on the iPad are the Navionics charts.
I much prefer the Memory Map/ Antaries although the lack of scrolling between charts can be a nuisance.

+1 for ACF50. Not needed to use it on my new Beta but it s doing a brilliant job on my anchor windlass.
( and my GSA. Buy it from Nippy Norman, he's a good bloke. Amazon sux.)
Didn't go to the SBS this year, went last year and spent the winter nailing my purchases from that visit into place on the boat.
The new AWBs are getting more and more hideous though, all designer sharp angles, large open spaces and cheap looking finish. I'd hate to try to sail on- if anyone...
When I fitted my Beta 30 I changed the shaft also- the old stuffing box seal part on the shaft had made a deep score in the shaft (and the shaft was also worn under the cutlass bearing)
Shafts aren't expensive and it may be worth careful inspection before you order up a PSS seal.
BTW- I had...
