    Yes after rubbing down of course. Some areas were bare wood but seemed to go on both without any bother.

    Why get rid of the varnish? Is she kept in the water or dry sailed? Paint will not cure the leaking problem if that is your plan.

    Charts - Solent how old is too old ?

    Its like a lifejacket or life raft useless unless up to date and tested. Here on the East coast sand banks change dramatically and often , so always wise to keep charts up to date. Would never go cruising without without up to date charts, too late to correct them when disaster strikes.
