Lessons from the wreck of the Torrey Canyon

Is the quoted really true? I read Hartford's article and the April 1969 Popular Mechanics one he links to, and the tides were not otherwise mentioned. If anything Captain Ruigiati's order to change / maintain direction comes across as stubbornness, countermanding his First Officer as if he...

    Tides in your calendar/diary 2019

Are your events viewable at https://calendar.google.com ? If so, it's actually Google Calendar, not Samsung's, and you can add them by going into Settings on that webpage (icon of a cog or gear) and then Add Calendar > From URL on the left hand side.

    Tides in your calendar/diary 2019

There is also a "subscribe" link at the foot of every location page. On a Mac you can just click this and it'll add the tides in the Calendar application - probably on iPhone, too? On a PC I guess you can right click and copy the webcal: URL.

Time for a new Fridge - what would you do

+1 Regassing will probably breathe new life into it, if you can find a local little fridge man who can. Rebuilding with Celotex may reduce power consumption by as much as 40%. Insulation is the primary factor in reducing power consumption, and I doubt you can buy a fridge with insulation...

So you'd be quite happy to buy an AWB for a circumnavigation?

    Sailing Kit Advice Please

Mine do. Think it's the BR2 Offshore from this page, as it's the same colour and detailing: https://www.mailspeedmarine.com/on-the-water/guides/top-6-sailing-jackets/ Currently on discount at the Musto "outlet" store at Portsmouth Gunboat Quay (they have two stores there - they sell last...

"Ring main" of 5v USB sockets for the boat

You'll be wanting Qualcomm's Quick Charge or USB-C soon enough - they can charge newer phones at twice the rate, and I can even run my Macbook off USB-C. Stick to good quality 12v lighter sockets and appropriate USB adaptors.

Venezuelan pirates attacking yachts.... or not?

I heard an interview with a Venezuelan who said she had to leave the country (she was lucky enough to have family in the US) after she was robbed at gunpoint for the third time. She first time she thought "it happens, it's a once-in-a-lifetime thing, get over it"; she felt shakey after the...

I'm not sure whether this applies to boats only but I've never seen it at home

Don't these hand warmers work on the same principle? The filling is solid when discharged, and you drop them in a pan of boiling water to re-energise them, melting the contents. To activate them you flex the little metal disk inside, and this causes the contents to suddenly start...

Lead Acid, AGM vs Lithium Ion batteries

In a thread on one of the mailing lists I subscribe to (Amel owners Yahoo Group, I think) there was a post by someone who seemed very knowledgable, and who claimed to work in the industry, that convinced me that lithium (LiFePO4, I think) now has a lower total cost of ownership than lead acid...

    Honda EU20i generator or other?

The EU20i is probably the best small genny on the market at the moment. The EU10i is not as good. I'm on mobile so can't properly link, but search for what Pete Power has to say on this. He reckons he can get you a good deal on the EU20i and it's the generator he never worries about people...

    Decathlon store near Port Solent

Their website says the 3rd of May, which means I shall miss out on the free backpack, as I I'm away that week. Love their stores.

Indians board US flagged yacht in International waters and send crew to UAE

Suspect a Saudi Court will rule she has technically been "abducted" because she departed without her guardian's permission (which is required for Saudi females to travel).
