Flushing outboards after use with fresh water

I was wondering just how important it is to flush my engine after use in salt water? Obviously, it must help in the long run but I wondered just how much of an effort it is work making? What do you do? Has anyone not flushed and never had issues after many years... has someone regularly flushed...

The courtesy of Solent MoBo skippers

Were you sailing or motoring? If you were sailing then of course the mobos would have to give way regardless and you should just hold your course. In all circumstances the only way the colregs work to avoid collisions is by us all following them. If we start to break the rules then no one...

    Need Some Advice!!!

When I looked for a boat I really wanted an S23 but I went through exactly the same thought process as you... open cockpit... English weather... in the end I decided I really wanted the ability to get inside out of the wind/rain ahead of the extra accommodation. I felt that I would probably only...

    Need Some Advice!!!

Welcome! I can't comment too much on boats that I haven't owned but I have owned a MF625. Mine had a Suzuki 115 outboard. I wouldn't say that it was a suitable boat as it really doesn't meet your requirements... it is just 2 berth at a squeeze and I would say that for more than a couple of...

Think I upset a yachtie is this a crime??

The problem is that for many it is a very emotive topic especially if you have been injured as a direct result of inconsiderate wake making as I have. It is great though, IMO, that the topic is discussed as it does highlight just how important it is not to create a significant wake when near...

Think I upset a yachtie is this a crime??

They do. I have done a lot of boating around Cape Coral in Florida. They have massive signs saying "NO WAKE"... speed has nothing to do with it... some of these no wake areas are to protect property but it is also to protect wildlife and the banks and shores from excessive erosion.

Think I upset a yachtie is this a crime??

Well said nograss. I was out in Plymouth today and a Merry Fisher 805 went by my pontoon at what looked like a perfectly acceptable speed until his wake hit the pontoon. Boats tied up rolled around with fenders popping out from between the boat and pontoon. I think all boats were OK but this...

Why not to buy a 54m yacht

When in glasshouses you really shouldn't throw stones... You are right... I did say "Crews of yachts like that are normally experienced professionals and not idiots" and if you are an native English speaker and are as clever at semantics as you suggest then you would have seen, and hopefully...

Why not to buy a 54m yacht

I know the result of what happened... we don't know the cause. I said "most" experienced professionals. Your third point is valid... no one... probably not even the harbour master or even the skipper, knows for certain what happened... but the report was that the harbour master said it was...

Think I upset a yachtie is this a crime??

Firstly my injury was on a river so clearly they don't dissipate rapidly. Commercial vessels, particularly big ships, don't create a wake at such slow speeds and in any case... if they do it doesn't mean you should. You might not have seen a problem caused by wash but my experiences tell me...

Suzuki outboard - reset trip data on display

I tend to agree. I called up Suzuki and they said they don't provide customer support. I am surprised my dealer didn't know already but they have found out now... hold down arrow!

Sea toilet sea cock. Open or closed when underway? Daft question time!

I always close sea cocks when not needing to be open. I take the view that there is little benefit to having a hole in my hull open when it could be closed on the basis that a hole could potentially let in water and I don't like the idea of water inside the hull!!

Why not to buy a 54m yacht

I do wish people wouldn't jump to conclusions when there is no evidence to indicate what happened. Crews of yachts like that are normally experienced professionals and not idiots. I am not saying it couldn't happen but it is highly unlikely that a professional skipper would do that deliberately...

Think I upset a yachtie is this a crime??

I know that boats need a certain speed to maintain control but that is never so fast that your wake would be an issue. If it is then quite simply the wind/tide is too strong for your boat and you shouldn't be on the water. Sorry if that seems a little harsh but we should only operate our boats...

Think I upset a yachtie is this a crime??

Unfortunately, in most cases it isn't likely you will know whether any harm was done. The nature of wake is that it hits moored boats and the shore sometime after you have gone by. The boat that caused the wake that injured me was long gone by the time it hit my boat so I couldn't even make a...
