    AIS Display Units

You could use seaPro Free. Plug in the Nasa unit via serial (or use a usb-serial converter) and auto-scan for the com port. There are no detailed chart with the Free version, but you do see all the targets, CPA, TCPA, etc, all available AIS information and own ship GPS. The only charts are...

    Laptop charts/software

Not sure your statement of "vector charts contain less info" is correct! It would be more accurate to say "at certain zoom levels, the detail may not be apparent".

    Using Netbook for chartplotting

recommend staying clear of Atom processors as they are slow at drawing charts.

seaPro Lite Navionics will read them. Can use them simultaneously with the chart plotter too and plug in AIS, GPS, NAvtex etc. £112 if you already the Navionics card reader, £153 with a reader. (includes one off Navionics licence required to use the charts with seaPro).

The Perils of Using Dated Charts?

I seem to remember a vessel a few years ago that hit a rock. It was using out of date C-Map charts and started Mandation of ECDIS in Norway

PC Plotter Software -- one man's view

fyi - seaPro supports most chart formats. Navionics requires a one off license though it does mean one set of Navionics charts will work on both a chart plotter and computer. seaPro comes with a USB dongle meaning it can be installed on as many machines as you like, just the dongle needs to be...

PC plotter software in February PBO (rant)

This was reviewed in January's YM. Was it correct in saying you can only plan on one chart at a time?

    OpenCPN and Navionics on Laptop

I use seaPro with the Navionics card reader. Don't know about other software but its useful being able to use the Navionics charts on a laptop and chart plotter simultaneously. Also means only one set of charts is required for laptop & chart plotter..

Memory Map £40 UK Charts- any users?

seaPro Lite is free with any chart pack... AIS, RADARpc, autopilot, GPS compatibility. There is a demo available at www.euronav.co.uk. Always best to download all the packages you're looking at and have a play.

    Chart software for netbook

seaPro Lite has the whole of the UK & channel isles and Ireland for £99.95. Doesn't take up too much disk space either. I'd recommend downloading a demo of the ones you are thinking about and having a play with them all. Go with the one you prefer.

    Laptop navigation

Presuming we are talking about a USB GPS receiver, 3G coverage is not required to receive GPS positioning! If you are talking about a 3G USB modem then this may be the case... but I've never heard of anybody using 3G for location purposes and I wouldn't recommend it either.

    Laptop navigation

I would think carefully about scanning in charts and calibrating them. A - you need a big scanner, B - now many points are you putting on the chart? Surely you want your charts to be as accurate as possible and I'm afraid I have never found this to be an accurate way of creating navigational...

The CSB200 Class B AIS Transponders has built in GPS but this requires the unit and antenna which in total comes to about £600. Are you looking into an AIS transponder or just receiver?
