Re additional supports, the central pillars at Albert Bridge were added in the 1970s. I drove over this a couple of days ago, and had forgotten how rickety the decking is!

I'm surprised that nobody is setting up a ferry. Would be quicker and cheaper than a bridge, I suspect. TfL had already been consulting on plans for a temporary bridge for cyclists and pedestrians.

Very fine, at the blue anchor. Lots of rowers recovering after a strenuous morning outing. A very low tide (0.5m below datum at Richmond, I think).

I went through Richmond on Tuesday. No photos as it was raining I am afraid, but they did seem to be working on the lock. I had always assumed that the works on the weir are on the motors and gears etc, ie the stuff on the top walkway, and they don't do much underwater?

Not an answer to the question, but ...
I moor at Ely on the River Great Ouse. It is maintained at a level that is below high water at Kings Lynn, by the sluice at Denver. This operates as a huge one way valve, which lets fresh water out around low tide and stops the sea coming in around high...
I should stress that no boats were sunk (or even collided) in the making of this photograph on Saturday.
