Oriegon Compass »3000« 2-burner alcohol cooker - pan holders.

I bought an alcohol cooker from Compass 24, the 3000 model, which is basically a generic Origo. I managed to use my existing gimbal and clamp set from my old gas cooker. They are still available for about £30 from Force 4.

    YouTube, again.

I tend to enjoy those most that do something a bit different or where I can relate to their cruising. Cadoha make some very entertaining and well edited videos about the South Coast and West Country where I might actually sail one day. Sail Life and Leo with Tally Ho I find riveting. A lot of...

Electric Outboards just not there yet?

I was an early adopter of the Torqueedo and bought one in 2010. It still runs well and I have saved petrol and servicing costs over that time, which cancels out a big part of the additional costs. Convenience of no smells in the car, a breaks down to lift in and out of the dinghy. The newer...

    Electric outboard

Whilst Torqueedos etc are undoubtedly more expensive, I have one that I have used for 11 years, after my old 2 stroke died. Servicing costs have been nil, I just hose it down and chuck it it the car. If you are technically minded you can service your own small 4 stroke, but many will have it...

Navigators ad General Insurance - any experience, good, bad or indifferent?

I have used them for many years and found them to be very good, including handling a claim very smoothly. They were very flexible during the first lockdown, when the boat had to stay afloat delaying some yard work recommended by the surveyor. So I would certainly recommend them. However, the...

    Wing Owners

I have recently bought a Wing 25. I am still finding my way around her, but happy to try and answer any queries if you PM me.

Best mobile phone coverage for sailing around Britain.

I am intrigued? Are we talking Simon's Cat, catamarans or something altogether racier?

    Naval Gun droop.

From my own experience with field artillery, it is an incredibly complex calculation, the factors such as differing wind strengths at different altitudes, and even the rotation of the earth to take into account at longer ranges. Lasers are used to calculate the barrel droop as the barrel heats...

    Good youtuber

I agree with both of the above choices. Could I recommend Sailing Cadoha, they are an engaging couple, with some really well produced content? The thing I like is that they are based in the Solent and cruise there and West Country, so come over as much more real life than those in the Caribbean.

The pointy bow... About to be consigned to history?

Yes, the Dutch have been designing boats that way for years...

Is Corryvreckan whirlpool predictable by the tides?

There is a useful anchorage on the Jura side at the western end in reasonable weather. From there you can walk along so you can see the whirlpools at mid tide. The Grey Dogs are much more dramatic, as it is such a narrow channel. I have taken my boat through east to west at what I thought was...

Time to switch to electric ?

I have had a Torqueedo 1003 for ten years and I am really pleased I bought it. You need to make a realistic assessment of your likely usage. I seldom do more than a couple of miles at a time, and the range is more than fine for me, I seldom drop below 40%. The benefits are ease of handling...

    RED is DEAD

Out of interest, if one were planning a gradual shift to white, how many waterside fuel docks in the Solent area currently supply white diesel? I appreciate this is more of an issue in more remote areas with a higher proportion of commercial users.

Purchase survey on sub 10k boat?

Probably 24-27 foot, and over 25 years old, so a survey may be necessary to get insurance?

Purchase survey on sub 10k boat?

I am currently downsizing and currently looking at boats in the sub 10k bracket. I am an experienced boat owner, and know most of the obvious issues, and am looking for a boat in good shape, not a project. Compared to the likely purchase cost of the boat, a full survey would work out very...
