    Mooring Shackle Mousing Material

The local mooring contractor insists that any shackle that is under water and difficult to regularly inspect has the pin welded to the body before shooting the mooring. He reluctantly allows me to monel wire on the shackles I can see ! Tony <hr width=100% size=1>

Home made single line reefing. Can I?

Have just fitted a single line reefing system (to Vancouver 27) for reefs one and two. By the sound of it my original setup was the same as yours. What I have now is this: the reefing pendant from the cockpit goes via a clutch and deck organiser to a turning block at foot of mast, then through...

    Panasonic Toughbook laptop

There are many P. Toughbooks listed at Ebay.com in the USA. Most are CF-25s (166mHz, 64mb, 4.0 gB with CD-ROM and floppy) and go for around $175. Ancient and obsolete of course, but maybe just the job for the boat... So a few questions to anyone out there who is familiar with these things - 1...

    2003 Tidal Predictions

Re: 2003 Tidal Predictions - wxtide32 prog Have just discovered that the latest version of wxtide32 program has a v. much reduced set of UK and Scotland ports (my home port, Ullapool, has vanished). It may therefore be of little value. If I find a fix I will let you know !

    2003 Tidal Predictions

Download wxtide32.exe from www.wxtide32.com. The program covers the period 1970 to 2038 and is free. It is adequately accurate - but if you get stuck in the mud don't blame me...

    Battery management

Re: Battery management: Adverc system This is good advice ! I have an Adverc system with a split charge diode; the Adverc box takes care of the voltage drop across the diode. Both battery banks are quickly and fully charged when the engine is run. This would never happen with the standard...

Echopilot - forward looking depth gauge

My ancient Walker depth gauge is misbehaving and needs to be fixed or replaced. Has anyone had experience of the Echopilot Bronze forward-looking depth gauge ?

    Battery fuses

It took many phone calls to discover what current the starter motor might draw. Eventually - (taking an average of the many guesses I was given) - I decided that 150A would be about right for a Bukh 20 (disregarding the initial inrush - which the slow-blow fuse should cope with). The fuse size...

    Battery fuses

Re: 250 Amp fuse NigelB This is not intended as flack ! Think I understand your comment re resistance being less than .05 ohms – this obviously limits the current that can flow; however the resistance of battery cable is about 0.04 ohms/100metre. Assume a cable length of 1 metre, that the...

    Battery fuses

Re: 250 Amp fuse This is in reply to NigelB - I'm new here and not too sure how things work on the forum. Maybe my wiring is not as neat & tidy as you think...supposing the positive cable from the cranking battery to the starter solenoid fell off onto the block ? I do not follow your comment...
