Non marine engines came with various camsshaft specs so could be marinised industrial unit say from a generator that ran all day at 2600rpm or may be a camshaft from a cannibalised unit the governor would be set at speed required

Before attempting any in depth stripping down you can try listening via a stethoscope or metal rod to identify if any strange noise is coming from the gearbox or stuffing gland area , run the engiine at various revs also you could unbolt the coupling and listen to gearbox at various revs...
How about using a set of feeler gauges, one piece either side you need the thickest possible that can remain mobile then using decent long nose pliers attempt to clamp the card between the feelers the beauty of this method is you can vary the thickness to suit also I would try some mild heat...
Worth giving gearbox oil a sniff if for some reason it overheats especially ATF it discolours and has a burnt smell I know because I was advised it is ok to run gearbox in astern mode but later was advised to fit oil cooler,I did neither but changed to r/h prop

Another method of kickstarting a charger when your battery is dead just rig it in parallel to a good battery with jumper leads for short while to get some juice in it maybe turn off before disconnecting avoid sparking
