    Any Torquay Marina residents..

I have berthed in Torquay since 2010, but as I am now selling the boat (which is now with the dealer in Lymington) I am not renewing. I think the fees are more than Brixham, but as it is only 15 minutes drive from my home to Torquay convenience wins. I have found the staff helpful and...

    Visited Torquay today

They have had water leaks, through the the roof, so have moved to temporary facilities in car park

    Bird scarer

I agree, total waste of money. Didn't scare the gulls, but annoyed the neighbours as 43% of humans can hear the ultrasonics!!

    New boat - antifoul?

    +1 for Coppercoat

    Young kids in marinas

Our grandchildren must wear lifejackets in the marina until they can swim 100m, then it is optional but encouraged.

    Torquay boat fire

We went past her on Friday, and there were work people on board. Thank goodness the wind blew her away from the other berths!

    Seagull scarers/deterrents- any suggestions???

I tried one of those ultrasonic emitters, but 43% of the population can actually hear them. Neighbouring boat owners were disturbed, so I abandoned the use of it. It did not have much effect on the seagulls!

    Lyme Bay

I think it is a mix of shelter and awaiting orders. I remember back in 2008/9 seeing >13 tankers waiting for best prices for oil. The Saga ship is now off Brest, so probably didn't want the crumblies aboard to experience the F9 west of The Lizard.

Flybridge vs Open vs Hardtop and why ........

Flybridge great for extra space and for spotting lobster pots. But increased height does result in more windage that can lead to challenging berthing. On balance, glad we switched from hardtop to flybridge when upgrading from 10m to 13m.

    What is the rationale?

My Nimbus 335 (previous boat) had the same - 2 small rudders, each side of propeller. It made direction more efficient when under way, but no turning traction when in neutral.

Coming to you soon. Oyster farming in your marina.

This is bad news. I ended up with a colony of oysters in my exhaust outlets a couple of years back. Vicious things to remove!

    Teak vs Synthetic Teak?

I went for Flexiteak at build, and have not regretted it at all. Our previous boat was real teak, which turned nasty uneven grey, and was a pain to treat each season. Now it is just a scrub and rinse to remove bird poo and dropped crisp marks. A greater benefit was that Flexiteak was cheaper...

    Fender socks

I am thinking of trying the roll neck fender sock kit as an alternative to the pre-made covers. I would welcome your experiences, good and bad. Many thanks

    Fly bridges in the UK

Went for a flybridge for our third boat, and very glad we did. In nice weather it is great, and we get extra space for socialising or enjoying the ride. The grandchildren love it. The lower helm is fine too if the weather deteriorates, and I find that easier for berthing. This is probably...

Like Piccadilly Circus off the Devon coast today

Judging by the way they are lit up at night (we can see them from our windows too, as we live just below Hurricane) they must be burning a lot of fuel with the generators.
