A ahole mess of Sandy damaged boats

In season I live on a boat only a few miles across this bay in Forked River New Jersey USA. It was a very bad day for so many people. Our marina staff worked tirelessly round the clock for many days ahead of the storm. The wind spead came ashore at 89mph sustained and the storm surge did the...

    folding props for saildrive

I put a Kiwi on a Bavaria 40 Ocean with a 120 sail drive in the spring and after a full season I absolutely love it. A friend with an Island Packet 38 recommended it and now I'm a believer. I gained about .5-.75kt in light wind. At over 20,000 lbs moving a little easier is a nice benifit...

    Perigrine Falcon off Cherbourg

I had heard there was a pair of nesting peregrine falcons in Vermont (USA) during the winter months so I decided I really wanted to see them and take pictures. This was a number of years back and if I remember in February with a lot of snow on the ground. I managed to climb up a very snowy...

Keeping the frost off a wooden dinghy

The best way I know of to avoid frost on wood is to keep sailing south until the butter melts. Then toss the anchor and enjoy. The only ice on wood should be when you spill your frosty drink in the dink.

If you are a live aboard...

If you really feel the need to know what day it is maybe purchase one of these cruising clocks. I usually travel with a boat full of women. I assure you I can tell when another month has slipped by.

    How to Cook sausages

I like your ingenuity and resourcefulness. You can also make it a red neck BBQ and wrap your dinner in tin foil and put it on top of the engine. Go motor around for a while (not a sail)...and when you arrive at your location your dinner will be done. Yes I reside in the U.S.A...

    Bavaria teak cockpit seats

Usually the reason boards start to lift (not all of course) is water intrusion. If you're black caulking is chalky and cracked or missing altogether you need to recaulk. I had a number of boards that lifted and buckled on the deck before I bought her. I removed the calking and cut the...

    Volvo, Yanmar, or...oars?

you might be surprised of the progress a set of oars can make. Many years back I was in New York Harbor in the US aboard a 26 foot Colgate sloop and the engine died. It's a very busy harbor and there was no wind. We looked around below and found some paddles which I thought was a strange...

A yacht with 21 people on board has exploded off the coast of New Jersey.

The name of the boat is "Blind Date". This is said to happen 17 miles right off my coast (yes I'm from New Jersey, USA). I watched an aerial video clip and by the looks of it they have a lot of assets on the dock waiting for the injured. I counted several helicopters, a dozen ambulances and...

    Dogs on boats!

Our dogs have been raised on our boat since they were pups. The Silky seems to have a taste for mahogony. Luckily the pup part is passed. Now it's a pleasure having them aboard. The going ashore for a walk becomes more of an adventure than dog walk. They both want to leap off the dingy and...

Do you lube your mast track?

McLube Sailkote works wonders. I spray it on the boltrope of the sail as I feed it into the mast track. It goes in easy and slides out easy. works every time. http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=551

    Sea Kayak as a Tender?

I was a ocean kayak instructor for many years so I've actually tried this many times. There are many types of kayaks. the following refers to fiberglass and plastic hollow kayaks. If you have a kayak that is narrow/long with a very tight english style cockpit then boarding is more difficult...

Why doesn't Tom Cunliffe Like Centre Cockpits?

I'll add my personal words of wisdom. Who cares what Tom thinks (sorry Tom). I love owning and sailing a center cockpit. It has pros and cons but it does a few things really well. It floats. It moves when i put the white sail thingies up...and my wife doesn't moan and groan about sleeping in...

Just discovered RADAR - it's brilliant!

I only started using Radar a couple years ago but now I'm a believer. The most important part of using Radar is knowing how to use it. Don't wait until you're in a no visibility situation to turn it on and think you're going to make proper use of it. There are a lot of various settings to...
