This is an interesting thread - earlier this year we overheard a Dutch sailor being called by name on Ch16 by Channel VTS (I think that's what they called themselves) to clarify what they were doing when they turned to pass behind a large ship, so effectively sailing the wrong way temporarily...
There's also the added complication of checking in/out of France - those heading north on a longer passage may prefer to stay in France and check out at Cherbourg before heading to UK

I think there was about 4m tide at the time - if she is 88m long there isn't much room to turn around... so the GPS position doesn't look unreasonable, making allowance for where the antenna might be positioned....
