Have a range of various used anchors for sale. There are 13 including..., (weights in kg) a Brittany 16kg, Danforths 6.5, 11.0, CQRs 12, 13, 16, 12, 12, 12, 11, 16 (about half these original design and manufacture, a couple are copies). A Fisherman's 10.5 and a broken CQR - only missing the...
The anchorage in Long Ayre NE mouth, bigger bay to NW of Outer Croagle rocks is still marked. The narrative does say it can be affected by a NE swell. The other anchorage is in the West bay "towards the bridge". A third mentioned but not marked is off the school in 6m.
Thanks for the input.
There's a limit to discovering rocks. They don't move usually, but various people do keep discovering new ones.
You must have been sailing for a long time, srm, to have bought a first edition (1909) :)
Dunedin's post about discovering some rocks in Shetland wasn't saying that that Cullivoe is...
Did you ask CCC?
There's been a change in editor due to retirement. The amendments are being worked on. Amendments are published annually. Then when a new edition is published for each area, the amendments are re-set, as they'll all be in the new volumes. If more volunteers helped that might...
WD40 is a water displacement material, not much of a lubricant and not a penetrating oil. (The WD stands for Water Displacement). But now they also well under then brand WD40 a variety of other materials such as PTFE spray, that's also labelled WD40.
I use ordinary diesel for penetrating oil.
I've had an MD2030 since 1995. I reconditioned it 2 years back, but it probably didn't need it. Hourmeter has been unreliable but likely 3000 hours at that stage. It uses about 1L oil a season. No vapour from either filler cap or dip stick. If you have these symptoms, I think there's a problem...
A good directory of galvanizers in Australia is on the GAA (Galvanizers Association Australia) website. https://gaa.com.au/find-a-galvanizers/
This covers about 90% (some are not members).
I've been in many of the Australian galvanizers places (and I'll be back there again in Feb), and have seen...
I was there nearly 2 weeks back, and it gets better every time. The new amenities are an improvement, the new walkway and hardstanding area better, the Hotel has had a makeover in fabric and in food and is a great place to go for coffee, food or more. The reception at the marina and offered help...
I've always though that Catenary is most useful when you don't need it, and all but non-existent when you do need it.
In other words, there's no point in discussing its usefulness.
I use a 10m nylon snubber (rope and hook on the chain) as shock absorber.
I use 10mm diameter plastic tubes about 75mm long. A long cable tie goes twice though it and at one end wraps around the stay, and the other end ties round the coax. The tie sort of forms a figure 8. The length of tube can be varies to set the offset, and if you don't have cable ties long...
I add powdered oxalic to warm water until no more will dissolve. Then I add about 5% by volume dishwash liquid. I then use this mix to scrub the deck with a brush until it foams. The foam slows down evaporation and also does some cleaning. Rinse in water.
"How far out of range will you be? Would a masthead antenna for either your AIS or your phone get you the sort of range enhancement you want? "
Perhaps 500 M
I often find that I'm out of range of a land based AIS receiver, and so am invisible to those left ashore looking at (for example) Marine Traffic website.
There seem to be many tracker systems that use satellite based GPS to get a location, but only transmit using mobile phone technology (LTE...
I have no fridge, but sail on and off most of the summer. I've found several things that last a long time without special storage. It's cooler in Scotland!
Lurpak (standard) butter will last about 4-6 weeks. Tries many others which don't last as long.
Olive spread (Bertolli) I came across when a...
This is perhaps the trickiest part of assembly of the engine. The casing over the regulation levers (I wouldn't call it a timing cover, as it doesn't set the timing) connects to the fuel injection pump by a slide linkage. There's an umbrella shaped plastic cam that alters the setting. And...
