    Does anybody find

Went through Manchester AIrport on my collegues passport after they were accidentally switched at check in. Obtain £100 of Euros, and went through security. It wasn't until we were about to board the flight did i realise. We do have the same name. Wouldn't have happened at the other end at...

    Cleaning Charges

I was fortunate enough to be working top side, however i felt that the irons that were clamped on were a little excessive and worrying especially with a skipper wondering around muttering things like "working his passage" and "I'll show him a bowline close up" etc <hr width=100% size=1>

    Cleaning Charges

To all boat owners, i need your advice!!My skipper recently tried to charge me £40 to clean & polish his boat, is this a reasonable rate or should i ask for a discount? Softer Polish maybe? and what about hot water, should i dare ask for it? Iam new to this sailing lark, but a keen scuttlebutt...

Got thrown off a boat this week.

Now of course he did have a point of view, which is why I'm just going to chalk it up to experience and not take the matter any further. I must admit that I probably did try his patience somewhat. He asked me to do a simple manoeuvre like sailing up to a buoy, which I attempted (20 Knot wind)...

Got thrown off a boat this week.

Got thrown off a boat this week. Decided that I wanted to improve my boat handling skills and get to know Solent Waters. So I enrolled for a week's course with one of the smaller, Solent-based, RYA-aproved Sea Schools run by a chap, to whom I shall refer as "Captain Bligh", although I may be...

    Navigation and spherical objects.

Indeed a most excellent and true-to-life book, being not one but four separate accounts woven into one. The theory about Indian art being influenced by the fragmented images reflected by waves is fascinating.

Has anyone test sailed the Bav 32

For what it's worth, I've sailed Bav 34s quite a few times, which is the next model up. My opinion and others I've talked to much more knowledgable than me is that they are excellent value for money but you get what you pay for. They handle quite well up to about F5 but watch out for the gusts...

Repairs to lifejackets - help required

If you were to buy a new life jacket from a well-known supplier, you would probably find that it is held together with velcro strips. They don't seem to use zips any more. The velcro ones work fine, although I think there must be a limit to the number of times you can open and close them before...

    Rip-Offs

Re: The solution to your mail order problems! You're right of course. I had come to the same conclusion myself. Only problem is, I live a long way from the sea. Trying to buy everything just before casting off for a longish trip is a bit tricky, especially if it's 4:00 a.m to catch the tide...

    Rip-Offs

Is it just me or were there a spate of rip-offs at the end of last year? Being relatively new to yachting, I was stocking up on bibs-and-bobs by Internet/Mail-Order. In my opinion 3 well known (but for obvious reasons, nameless) companies in my opinion ripped me off. Company A went bust (or as...

    VHF inland

I suppose the point is really that if people started using Marine VHF on land like mobile phones, then pretty soon the channels in coastal regions would be jammed and nobody in inland waters would be able to get a message through. Sorry to be fuddy duddy, but it's a case of what do you really...
