    I'm out of here. Bye.

Re: I\'m out of here. Bye. I'm out of here too. I don't want to be associated in any way with a forum where this sort of rubbish is spouted, or those who write it.

    Screwdriver bit.

I buy most of my tools from Tony Murland in Needham Market. (antiquetools.co.uk) He will know exactly what it is you are after and chances are have one too. He keeps a huge range of wood working tools that are of a far higher quality of anything you can buy today without paying huge sums.

I knew this job was not going to be simple

I've found Anglia Stainless to be the cheapest by far for Silicon Bronze, as well as being extremely helpful. No problem with small orders either.

    What is Coelan?

Thanks for the offer. I'm still making my mind up so if anyone wants to jump in first, feel free.

    What is Coelan?

Very useful indeed. I'm thinking of redoing Kestrel's decks this spring with Coelan. The Polyurethane on pine is just too hard to maintain. Looking at the product advice I see it has antislip properties without adding grit etc. Can anyone confirm just how non-slip it is?

    A question for Kestrel:

Can't really remember - too long ago. Guess it would depend on the stiffness of the batten although as a rule I think more screws rather than less. When you're trying to push in a thin flexible piece of wood liberally covered in epoxy a clean straight seam can make all the difference.

    A question for Kestrel:

Not sure about the lessons, but this is how I removed existing splines. I guess your splines were held in with a urea formaldehyde glue with a limited life, typical of the 1960's. In the same situation I routed them out with a 6 mm cutter to give a clean surface to epoxy in the new. The only...

    A question for Kestrel:

Afraid I don't do digital, still trying to understand analogue. Hopefully a verbal description will suffice. THe stern post is angled at around 15°? to the vertical and the trailing edge is parallel. The bottom edge is just an extension to the keel line whilst the top edge starts at the water...

    A question for Kestrel:

ccscott49 guessed correctly! When I obtained Kestrel she was glass sheathed. Once removed the teak planking beneath was in generally saveable condition except for the seams which varied from 1/2" wide and parellel through nothing. The options were either to replank, in which case I would have...

Trad Anchor light (convertion to LED) internal fittings?

I've always used an oil riding light. I don't remember it ever having blown out in 20 years, nor have I yet mananged to douse the boat in parrafin. It is a proper riding light and not a so called hurricane lamp. For the record I have only oil side lights too.

    Restoration, replica or newbuild?

When I "bought" Kestrel her condition was such that she had earlier been destined for the bonfire. Her condition was such that there was no option but to rebuild her if I wanted to go sailing. Today the only bits I haven't replaced are around two thirds the hull planking, the tiller, the mast...

    Blakes Lavac stoves

My thoughts on the newer version are from the instruction book I bought about three years ago. I bought my stove second hand less instructions and the new book I bought mentions the newer burner design that needs a longer pre-heat.

    Blakes Lavac stoves

My older version works OK without the wadding in place. I can highly recommend Blakes mail order spares service though for anything you may need

    Blakes Lavac stoves

I believe the newer burners are of a different, much heavier, design and take a lot longer to heat up than the older, lighter type that most of us are familiar with. With the new type you have to fill the cup completely with meths and ensure the wadding is in place to prevent the meths from...

    Morecambe Bay Prawner?

Re: Not, but lovely boat. Small Victorian yacht. Agree with Mirelle. I think it's just a very pretty yacht, similar size and age to Kestrel. Mirelle's is right about Kestrel's reef points. A well tied in reef is a joy to behold but it's not easy to get right. Looks to me that the mainsail is...
