    Engine bay fan?

I see from my logs they were Jabsco 3", 1457cfm. Rated 500 hrs. Similar in type to the one pictured in one of the previous posts. They are still functioning. I used flexible ducting (the coiled spring kind covered in plastic) to lead the air in and out. I made sure to have "extra" ducting in...

Sheet bend or 2 bowlines ?

    * Two bowlines are good if you want to untie quickly. * Sheet bends probably better if you want to untie under a bit of load. * If chafe is an issue you can double-loop the bowlines. * Two bowlines good if reach is an issue. For example I used to tie a really big loop bowline when setting a...

    Who's eaten the prop blades?

I agree it does look like damage. But a) both props have lost blades (one all of them) b) props about 12' apart. c) deep water marina d) boat parked stern to e) no other sign of damage So it kind of looks like a duck and walks like a duck, but no ducks in those parts - if you follow me! It...

    Engine bay fan?

When we bought our boat is had no engine extraction fans in the compartments (cat, 2 40HP engines). And no ventilation. But it worked fine. However compartment air temperatures reached 60C. Whether that is acceptable to the engines (and wiring) or not it made it very uncomfortable if you wanted...

    Who's eaten the prop blades?

Your experience on Ronhilda is interesting. Have you tried using aluminium anodes as I understand they are better for brackish water though I have no personal experience. See http://www.defender.com/html/zincs_info.html. I should note that the marina in question for these damaged props is salt...

    Who's eaten the prop blades?

Pics of the props I now have pics attached of the props from the new owner, which show that the blades seem to have broken off in one case and the entire shebang in the other. Also show the isolating bush. Looks to me like maybe internal corrosion rather than "eating away" as I suggested. But...

    Who's eaten the prop blades?

Prop material I believe that Yanmar changed the SDs to alu in the mid 2000s. So the props would have changed too? Our legs are definitely bronze and my wife (who sanded the props one time) says they are ditto. Thanks

    Who's eaten the prop blades?

Thanks for explaining that about the props not being protected by the anode which I had not appreciated. So maybe they lost their electrical isolation in some way. Would that be the purpose of a loose fitting washer that goes behind the prop? They are bronze props - like the legs.

Sticky lifting keel on my Bradwell 18

I used to keep a Bradwell 18 at Goldhanger near Maldon 30 years ago and had the same problem. The mud was soft and as the boat bumped up and down it just worked its way into the keelbox. I tried the "leave a few inches" idea but it did not work. I just had to bang it out. I can't remember if...

    Who's eaten the prop blades?

Many thanks for all the replies. The anodes are Yanmar brand and fit between the leg and the prop so no probs with quality or contact. Though like others a stray current sceptic I do wonder if this is the potential problem.

    Who's eaten the prop blades?

You are right it is nothing to do with me, but a) I'm curious b) don't want the new owner to have a bad experience. Thanks

    Lazy jacks re-fitting

Just to add to all the other excellent advice, when tying on your blocks or rings make the knots such as bowlines secure (i.e. send the rabbit round the tree twice). As you surely know new line is slippy and lazyjacks can get shaken about quite a lot not under tension which can loosen the knots...

    Who's eaten the prop blades?

Sold the boat last year after ten years. Original props still good if a little pitted - passed by the surveyor. The new buyer got on the boat for the first time this year and found no drive on one engine (Yanmar SD saildrives). Then discovered the prop had "fallen off". Hauled and found the...

    Restoring tired flooring

Thanks for those thoughts. I guess I will have another go at bringing it up and maybe cover with sheet vinyl if it does not look good enough.

    Restoring tired flooring

The flooring in our saloon is fake teak and ebony strip. It’s given good service over 12 years but is starting to look a bit tired and bleached in places. I am not sure how they make this stuff but suspect it is by printing a substrate then applying a clear film over it. Quite why we have...
