Plotters responding to an AIS MOB alert is down to how lazy the manufacturer is to getting their software to do this. It became a mandatory requirement on all commercial plotters some time ago, however the leisure boys are a bit slower off the mark.

Australian EPIRBS are predominately manaul activation only, they do not have the water activation switch as most other areas do, so the cost to make them is cheaper.
Outer sheath is split or chafed, get it fixed now or you will need a new radio as well. while you are waiting to do the job disconnect it, water easily enters the radio thru the socket and will wreck the insides in no time.
If you do not need either end to be waterproof, then a normal computer network cable will work, the real one just has the waterproof outer shell around a normal PC connector. Cannot remember if it is a straight or x-over.
Its buggered, you will never get them back in and if you do they won't stay there.

There are two versions of remote and two versions of nav interface.
4 pin plug models and 5 pin models, you need to look at the socket on your pilot and then choose the correct ones.
you cannot interchange between 4 and 5 pin models, they work in different ways.

Hook the NMEA in line of the Nasa to your gps, The data stream should them come to life resending the NMEA (but still maybe no AIS data), but at the 38400 baud rate rather than 4800. This is a usefel test to see if it is just a connections/adapter problem.

assuming you have a connection at the bottom of the mast and some other cables coming out of the same hole, undo the connection and take the cable round the other cables a couple of times and feed the twist into the mast.The twist will then work its way up the mast and around the other cables...
Is your GPS antenna in the beam of the radar scanner and fairly close?. Can be +/- 25 degrees from the horizontal. If so,then you need to get it out of the beam or seperate the two by a good distance.
