    Warship Courtesy Flag

Thank you. It makes sense. I think it was an American vessel that I saw. You mention a convention. I have heard that the French gendarmes/douaniers who cruise up and down the pontoons in Cherbourg looking for a soft target for the well known "walk of shame" to the cashpoint for the...

    Warship Courtesy Flag

A visiting yacht or merchant ship flies the red ensign as a courtesy flag. What flag should a visiting warship fly? In Portsmouth recently I saw a visiting frigate flying a union flag from the "spreaders". It seemed odd. Any forumite vexilloligist able to help?

Why are new boats not selling?

The protectable interests of an employer, justifying a restrictive covenant are, it is true, most likely to involve client connection, although possession of confidential information can also ground a restriction. However, with a vendor/ purchaser agreement, the law is much more flexible. Maxim...

Passage planning advice - Cherbourg to Solent

If you have wind against tide at the bridge, go west of the shingles into Christchurch bay then follow North Channel. Did that on weds pm with F6 southwesterly and a couple of hours of ebb tide left. Swell eased close to shore and 10 mins slog at hurst castle and you're home.

Cherbourg St Vaast and St Peter Port

Well, st vaast was fine, busy but plenty of space with some rafting. Cherbourg almost a ghost town, with free showers and wifi making it much better value than st vaast. Will try SPP later this week and report back!

Cherbourg St Vaast and St Peter Port

I have never sailed to France of the Channel Islands in August before, but this year was unable to set off in July so am forced to give it a go, probably leaving this Sunday. If anyone has visited any of the above places in the last few days, or is there now, I would be very grateful for an...

    Cobra Handheld - fantastic service

I bought a Cobra waterproof VHF last year. Excellent piece of kit, but I recently discovered that I had lost the belt clip. Googling showed no ready source of supply for a replacement so I send an email on their customer service webpage. Within 48 hours I have had an email exchange with their...

    Winch-style fitting - help needed!

Many thanks to Angele and RichardS. With luck that filler key will work, although it is not the same item as I had in mind. Will check when next on the boat if they are the same size To Sailorman - if I had had a picture, I would not have needed to ask the question!

    Winch-style fitting - help needed!

On my old boat we had a small plastic handle the end of which was moulded to the shape of a winch socket - i.e. it fitted the hole the winch handle goes in. It was to operate the gypsy on the windlass. The new boat has a hatch in the foredeck opened by two winch socket shaped locks! However, the...

Route reversal in Navionics ipad app

Hi there, Has anyone with the iPad app from Navionics worked out whether, having plotted a route, it can be reversed without going through the whole process of creating a new route? The graphics on the app are great but the instructions are meagre, and their website seems to offer no assistance.

    Using DSC for Routine calls

I can see that, prior to the days of AIS, attempting collision avoidance by VHF was fraught with difficulty. However, AIS means that, in most close quarter situations, the identity of the nearby vessel is now known. I have several times used a handheld from the cockpit of my boat to call a...

A diesel question for Guernsey residents

I was certain the diesel was white last summer when I filled up in SPP. I have just checked the Boatworks website, and they say quite clearly that it is duty free white diesel that they sell. Check it out for yourself: http://www.boatworksguernsey.com/Guernsey_Marine_Fuel.html
