    Newtown Creek

Evening all, I spent a lovely evening in Newton Creek last night, I took advantage of of one of the white mooring buoys, but no one came to ask for fees. What to do? I would prefer to pay my way, don't like taking advantage. Gord

    Battery Switch

Sorry really basic question here, considering heading to a remote creek tomorrow evening. I have 2 batteries, normally berthed in a marina so have got used to endless shore power. Should I switch to just one battery, so the other is saved for starting the engine the next day? Thanks Gord

    Free Fish

Not really, unless I catch many :-) Went to a hook and cook talk last weekend, the main theme was around trawling a line behind you when you sailed, the one question that I wish I had asked but didn't occur at the time was what about dangers of fouling the propeller with the line? Is this an...

Long keel boats on drying moorings

Sorry for such a newbie question, but as I am now exploring more and more in my little 25ft motorsailer with a long keel 3.5ft draft, I would like to stop limiting myself to marinas that do not dry, maybe go to newtoen creek for the evening etc... But I have been scared of what would happen...

    Water filter - Over tightened

Unfortunately he is not always down at the boat and lives a way off. But he is down next weekend, so that is the plan, then I am going to be using silicon grease. :-)

    Water filter - Over tightened

My brother is a nice guy but he is a bit of a gorilla, and he was the last to put the cap back on the water filter on my boat. I can't seem to loosen it now, I tried one of those rubber band loosen tools, but the band was too thick to go behind the cap. I really don't want to resort to using a...

    Swift 18.org in trouble!

This is a good reason not to use the same password on different sites, one site gets compromised, they would have your password for all the others Gord

Old (Antique ?) hand bearing compass

I have something similar to this on my boat, but it now seems stuck in one direction, any idea what might be causing that? what is the screw on the side for? Thanks Gord

    First single handed sail

I used the jib as it is furling and I could raise it from the cockpit, whereas my main halyard is secured at the mast, so to raise the main I have to leave the cockpit, and on this first occasion I was trying to avoid leaving the cockpit as much as possible.

    Boom Vangs / Kickers

Love that idea, thank you, and to all others for their input and advice :-) Re: I am worried about screwing something into the existing holes (how will I know if it is strong enough), but having trouble visualizing your suggest answer, can you please elaborate (sorry if it is just me being a...

    First single handed sail

I am feeling very proud at the moment, went out by myself for first time yesterday, I didn't go far, just from Southampton town quay to the Hamble entrance and back. My head is now getting into cruising mode, previously I have always been reliant on others, and most are up for a day sail but not...

    Boom Vangs / Kickers

Hi I have a few questions on this, apologies for what will no doubt for most of the answers be down to my naivety, I am new to sailing The reason I am asking is that my boat a 25ft motorsailer, with wooden mast and boom doesn’t have one, although she did in the past, I have an old picture of her...
