    Superyacht training

Slightly different to most of the threads on here but... Does anyone have any experience, direct or indirect, of any of the superyacht training schools/academies around the UK? I ask because my daughter (21) is considering work (interior/hospitality +/- deckhand) in this area as a career. She...

    Genoa sheet car question

Can anyone advise me as to the proper way to run my sheet through these cars please? So far I have simply run them under both sheaves but that clearly isn't making use of the fact that there are two. http://www.rutgerson.se/default.asp?id=10&ShowProduct=326&childto=&Group=72

    Broken stanchion base

I now know I can source the stanchion base from Clipper Marine (about £40 + VAT) and toe rail if necessary (sold as 6m lengths (£400 + VAT - ouch!). There were some very fine spider cracks radiating out from the base previously but not as big as the ones you see in the pictures now. I agree with...

    Broken stanchion base

Thought I'd ask the wider community for advice about this. Neighbour accidentally caught his pulpit on my guardrails when blown off as he was trying to berth, causing my stanchion to flex on its base. Base fractured and the aluminium toe rail (the stanchion base hooks under the toe rail on...

    Anchor Alarm

Mmm, well that's been an interesting and mildly entertaining thread  A few weeks ago we spent a windy night anchored in The Wig in Loch Ryan before our crossing to Bangor. On that location I wouldn't be happy using a depth alarm as the change in depth is so gradual that if you were to...

    Mooring strop/bridle

I didn't to start with but would now, simply to reduce the chain noise. If you cleat your bridle off at the right lengths on the deck I think it's unlikely that the chain will slip so far that you end up riding on the rope.

Engine service, taking the p.ss ?

Seems like a hell of a long pontoon if it takes them 37 minutes to get from their workshop to your boat. You must be sprinting to manage it in 5 :) I now do my own servicing. I may be a little slower but it feels good, improves confidence and leaves more spare cash for goodies.

    Mooring strop/bridle

I carry and use a rope/chain/rope bridle - 18mm anchorplait and 10mm chain in 4/2/4m lengths - but this is on a 37' 7+ tonne with slightly higher topsides than yours. Most of the buoys I have used around Clyde have pick-ups but there are a few with ring tops. As VicS says most of the time you'll...

    Autoglym Wheel Clean

There was a commercial group using Autoglym wheel cleaner to do hulls near my boat this winter - very impressive results. Doesn't it have oxalic acid in it? A lot cheaper than chandlery based cleaners.

    Antenna Cables through Deck/cockpit

This applies to the Cableport also and it won't catch lines/sails the way a swan neck might. Very simple solution to multiple cables, using only a single hole in the deck. It will also allow you to feed most "normal" size connectors through (PL259s, etc.). The only possible downside is really...

    Windlass and increasing anchor spec

Thanks guys - good sensible answers here as always! Yes, I would normally use a snubber too so that's a good point neil1967

    Windlass and increasing anchor spec

Thank you, all so far. Yes, I too have read many of the reports describing the relative differences in performance of the newer generation anchors compared with others, including the Delta. In my ideal world where I'm spending a lot more time aboard, and therefore on anchor, I would upgrade to...

    Windlass and increasing anchor spec

Yes - an anchor thread! But this is more about the windlass... My 37' approx. 7 tonne boat came with a copy 15kg CQR on 50m 8mm chain. I am considering replacing my anchor with a Delta but going up a size to 20kg. My windlass is a Quick Genius 1000. The spec for this gives a max. working load...

    Birthday Money

Another vote for SH DSC HH (can't remember model number off top of my head). Even with fixed DSC as well I would still want it on my HH since it's my emergency/back up VHF. The SH is an excellent radio though equivalent Icom I'm sure is just as good. Charge is held for months on single charge up...
