    Windlass why electric

Does your manual tell you it's a simple series motor G as though they have great from the off torque the down side is they will if not loaded simply accelerate to destruction....so unless they have a speed control device they are usually fitted with another winding that prevents that over...

    Seized stainless steel turnbuckle!?

May be a daft comment but are you turning it the right way........the top screw looks like its left hand thread and so turning it 'conventionally ' will be tightening it relative to the turnbuckle..........also galling is a form of cold welding and usually occurs when and while the two items...

    Windlass why electric

My Muir manual mentions motoring to relieve strain along with the use of a chain gate......

Air pockets coming from stuffing box

Having another quick look at your photos.....are you certain you have a stuffing gland seal and not some form of mechanical seal housed in the brass item protruding from the hose. I don't see any follower / gland nut assembly associatedwith the brass item..?

Air pockets coming from stuffing box

Don't waste your money.......the odd air bubble won't do anything much so long as they keep moving.....you just need a little more care when topping it up, but don't sweat over it.....auto lube (slurry) systems are notoriously fickle.......

And a reservoir that will also enable the oil to cool should you leave it circulating .........

Air pockets coming from stuffing box

Isn't the bubble travelling up the line to the stern gland.....? In which case its just an air bubble in a poorly filled greaser. Is it grease or oil or indeed a slurry of the two? To establish which way its moving just mark on the hose the leading edge of the bubble with a pen......I...

    Windlass why electric

Amongst other things try cost, size and convenience........on a 28ft electric is the way.......on a 48 foot mmmmm then hydraulic maybe, and beyond then no questions......!

    Part 1 and IHT

I seem to remember that vessel ownership differs significantly from ownership of other goods and if two ( or more) owners appear on the part one cert then on the death of one the whole of their share is given completely to the othe share holders......that is to say it can't be bequeathed...

    Inexperienced crew, yes or no?

I wonder why you go as 'skipper ' with all that that entails. Unless you are being paid to skipper the boat then I should describe myself as crew and the owner as skipper.....you are there just as an experienced hand to help with the sailing and advise. The rest is the owners domain......

    DC Motor problem Part 2

Ah so you mean the 'crank ' action generated a reciprocal motion.......I thought you meant that you motor revolved clockwise and anticlockwise

    DC Motor problem Part 2

Yes it would Alex, but it possibly means that it's not a straightforward motor especially if it had a parking and two speed circuit fitted . Therefore possibly a latent component may have failed / gone oc which may impact on its function . Have a look at the US patent diagram for a few...

    DC Motor problem Part 2

When you say 'could' rotate back and forth Roger how in practice was that achieved....the old style wiper motors generally just drove a cranck which I believed translated to the wipe stroke.....or in the above the pump stroke.....
