MOB - best sequence of steps with one person left aboard

For just one other person left on board, especially a less than strong, capable and fit person, KEEP IT SIMPLE. 1. sheet in main to centre boom 2. crash tack and lock helm (tiller to windward, or wheel to leeward) so that boat continues to sail around in circles, not hove to. 3. Get help. This...

    The hazards of liveaboard socialising

I recognise much of that tale from personal experience, but I can't believe I am alone in emptying my bladder directly into the marina when it is sufficiently dark.

    Sydney to Hobart

I particularly liked when the camera crews left the two lead boats - jump off the back into the noggin at 18kts (?) and get picked up by a RIB !

    Raceing for novices/advice sought.

If you ask 100 different people, you will get 100+ pieces of advice, so don't let that put you off !! Finding the nearest club is a good way, the vast majority have tame racing fleets and welcome newcomers with open arms.

    Most popular boat name?

I would have thought that the most common name for a boat , albeit temporarily would be .... Bloody/Effing/Damn/Flaming/Blasted* Boat * select as appropriate.

cherish your harbour master - a rant!

Old Harry: In order to get away from the squabbles about Newport, etc, I have started a new thread here http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?417226-MCAA-2009&p=5084196#post5084196

    MCAA 2009

In the rant thread about Harbour Masters, OldHarry has posted as below. I believe this is worthy of a separate thread. I have only perused the Contents here http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2009/23/contents but see no reference to anything regarding Perhaps Old Harry could enlighten us...

    IRC racing

@Krew2: what you and your friends are asking, and with Mr Ming's very clear explanation, is yet more proof why IRC is not worthwhile for a cruising yacht. You simply can't carry anything you don't need, in order to be competitive. Even to do well (or even just OK) in NHC and ISC for RTIR, I...

cherish your harbour master - a rant!

There is no room in the river and hence there is a bylaw which prohibits anchoring. Outside, you anchor wherever you like including across to Keyhaven and Hurst, and there is nobody in a position to charge for that.

Standard Vs Fully-battened mainsail on cruisers or racers

Because they cost more (I went for Ronstan cars which were over £1k in total). But the whole set up was worth every penny.

    RYA Shorebased instructor prequisites

I understand you can teach Shorebased theory if you are YMI qualified - which itself requires a 5 yearly update.

cherish your harbour master - a rant!

Yep, I understand its because Lord Montagu owns the river bed, not the Crown Estates, so he can get away with it. The National Trust used to charge for anchoring in Newtown Creek. Now they come alongside and say "we don't charge a fee but you are welcome to make a donation". I once gave...

cherish your harbour master - a rant!

i don't know how the management works so just done a quick Google. If I read the article below correctly, its down to lack of accountability of the commissioners i.e. they don't have to answer or justify their actions to anyone...
