This is advance information on what JAC16 participants can expect prior to the Start on 15 May, when the Tamar River SC will host the Jester Community’ gathering. The TRSC is located on the east side of the Tamar River, 3 miles from the Breakwater, north of the Devonport Naval Base and south of the 2 bridges. Google Maps helps.

Local Notices to Mariners are here: http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/qhm/plymouth/local-notices

It is important that you keep 100 metres clear of berthed/moored naval vessels and fixed installations, and give absolute right of way to naval vessel movements and the 3 chain ferries at Torpoint.

Programme

* Friday 13....... Evening Barbeque with singer ‘Sonny King’
* Saturday 14... Jesters Supper and Briefing
* Sunday 15......Skippers Last Breakfast and Start .......all times tbd

The club’s facilities – showers, toilets, bar, lounge, wifi, water, garbage, etc – will be open and available from Friday ( possibly Thursday tbd ). Moorings are available from Wednesday. It is intended that club members provide a limited ‘water taxi’ for those on club moorings, and transport to chandlers, sail loft, spar makers, etc. in case of specific need.

Moorings

It is currently anticipated that there will be perhaps 35-40 participants. The TRSC will seek to accommodate everyone ‘somewhere’, among unoccupied members’ club moorings adjacent to the club, across the way at Saltash SC, further up river near Cargreen, and a temporary anchorage close south of the club’s mooring trots. There are multiple marinas and fine anchorages around Plymouth harbour, and early arrivals might enjoy exploring.

The club has a Landing Pontoon, used primarily by Cadets, our 3 safety boats, tenders, and for short-term loading only. It is not stressed/rated for multi-yacht rafting or berthing – members do not stop overnight. Further, when a ‘chop’ develops in strong winds or wake-wash from passing displacement craft - e.g harbour tugs, tripper launches, RM landing craft – damage results both to boats moored alongside and to the pontoon. The ebb there runs at up to 6 knots. You may be asked to move.

However, we can accommodate on the pontoon – in clement conditions – up to "two handfuls of light boats OR one handful of heavies". A degree of give-and take will be necessary, and most will need to accept a mooring nearby.

A charge for moorings’ maintenance is included in the ‘Package’ below.

Hosting

Club hosts, including myself, will seek to ‘meet and greet’ arrivals during the days before the Start, direct you to a mooring, and present a simple ‘Welcome Pack’ containing updates, contacts, and local information. We’ll try to field specific questions and help resolve specific problems – just as you would. Several of us will be involved in ‘own boat prep’ so I am the designated contact on the ground, ‘cos I got ‘volunteered’.

There are supermarkets such as Lidl/Coop, banks, ATMs, food outlets and other resources 10 mins. walk away. Fuel can had in ‘EU-approved’ containers. There is an excellent food-pub next door.

Costs

The club will make a charge of £50 for the Package of mooring, facilities, and the 3 meal events as above. This should be paid by/during Friday, and an Identity armband will be issued. For those berthing elsewhere, the Skippers’ Supper ( £15 ) and the Last Breakfast ( £5 ) will be charged separately. Dunno about the BBQ as yet.

** It is important that we know who wants what and when, IN ADVANCE, so we can organise food, catering and bar staff, tables, chairs, etc….. so ALL participants are asked to advise us as early as possible – by email to ‘bilboatbath@gmail.com’ – of intentions and any changes.**

n.b. If you advise Ewen or Tony instead, they will have to cook your sausages….

Security

We occasionally have ‘uninvited guests’ wander around the club site and all members are now used to challenging an unknown face. We’d ask that you don’t make it easy for ‘local magpies’.

Plymouth/Devonport is a major naval base and we all need to be vigilant. There are constant waterborne patrols by armed Royal Marines and MoD police and we ask that you advise us of Skippers Name, Boat Name, Nationality, Contact Tel Number and where you are moored. That’s so we can respond to any urgent query from the QHM’s Representatives. It’s also a licensing requirement, so we’ll put a simple ‘signature sheet’ by the bar.

Questions

Any further queries can be addressed to us via myself/here….. bilboatbath@gmail.com
A contact mobo number will be advised nearer the time.

Looking forward to you all joining us…

Wil Bailey
