I understand that the EA have now completed their deliberations re
implementing the new boat registration requirements they informed us
about towards the end of last year.

In particular, they have confirmed that they will require all boats
afloat in marinas, whether in use or not, to be registered and to
display a current licence plate by 1st April this year.

I understand that EA teams will be out and about identifying such craft,
in marinas and elsewhere on the river, which will be 'stickered' to
advise owners of the need to register.

What is a bss??? I was over in Ireland recently to look at a small boat and all that the insurance people want is the fee.Aparently if you present a recent survey of vessel-they're happy.
Most Inland Waterways in the UK including the EA Thames and British Waterways will not issue a licence unless you have a current Boat Safety Scheme certificate.
Read all about it HERE

Thanks for the information. In Ireland apparently one can purchase a boat/yacht/barge and the Registration of the vessel inland is FREE. It is often referred to a Shannon Registration. They,Waterways Ireland, can issue Annual Canal Permits;costing 126 euros. It is an endemnity form. Most inland marinas will want evidence of insurance and to get that the boater just gets a survey apparently, pays the fee and the premium. It seems that the insurance company in Ireland places the onus on the owner of the vessel to hire competent persons to undertake workings related to gas, vessel refurbishment,etc...

From memory the Irish also placed reliance on their banks to hire competent people as well :)

Saw an EA patrol boat out yesterday checking boat registrations on boats moored along the bankside, even tying up to 1 to get on board to check both sides of the front screen, then logging details into a little hand held device thingy...

Do the new registration rules apply to marina owned craft used for manoeuvring berth holders boats ? These "tug" boats never go through a lock and so are not subject to any scrutiny by the EA lock keeper.

I thought they had flogged them all to pay for the Xmas party?

That would have been nice , we didn't have a Christmas party.

If it floats , it needs to be licensed.

Houseboats rarely pass through a lock either , but they still need one.

Patrol boats will be coming round the marinas.
