Zinc Oxide sun block and burnt bits when sailing

When sailing in the sun (ha ha) I am prone to burn my nose and ear tips. I used to use a zinc oxide stick but can't find this anymore. Does anyone know where you can buy it or is there an alternative?

Zinc (oxide) based sunblock isn't approved for this use in the EU, but can readily be found on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=zinc sunblock

A good alternative is a wide brimmed hat (with chin strap so it doesn't go sailing in the sun without you). I've also heard very good things about Ultrasun once-a-day sun screen (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultrasun-Extreme-Formula-Once-100ml/dp/B0026M7SM8), however haven't tried it yet, as the regular SPF 30 goop is sufficient for me once I've got a little tan going. Just gotta remember that the regular stuff degrades with sunlight (and rubs off too), so you have to re-apply it every couple hours.

The mk2 version was made from white tape as black got a bit hot and sweaty and slid off.

I use Riemann P20 once a day SPF 30 when diving and it lasts all day even being in and out of the water, even works on the top of my head where the hair has decided to let the sun in...

Google 'solar nose shield' and several purpose-designed products (for skiing, sailing etc.) should appear, attachable to sunglasses.

I wear a wide brim cotton hat and a face mask made from a kids Rashie shirt. Just steal one off the grandkids or they are available from sports stores for fishermen.

Around here hats are popular that have a peak like a cap but a huge skirt of fabric from the sides around the back down about 30 cms. With the aid of velcro this can be pulled around to make a cover for the lower part of the face. We call them Arab's hat. They look a bit stupid but do protect the ears and neck but not so well the nose. Only partially protected by the peak. I just use sunscreen on the nose. I wear long sleeved white tee shirt style and always long trousers. The other part I put sunscreen on is the top of my feet. Always sail barefooted. The white colouring is cooler than dark clothes or bare skin. So that is the normal rig for my sailing. Having said that I am currently having treatment for BCC on the end of my nose. Due to lack of care when I was young.
Not much help to you in the UK but good for Mediteranean. good luck and cover up olewill

I find the liquid types spread more easily. Get high factor waterproof, mossie resistant from aldi/lidl and slap if on ears, nose and face. It leaves less unexposed than stick types. I had no problems last year on a delivery trip from Rhône to southern Sicily.

Try Cotswold Outdoor, or one of the mountaineering shops- the serious climbers have sunglasses with leather or or flexy nose shields and the tend to be cheaper than yotti branded sunglasses
