Too busy following the moose prints, heading back to where they came, hope this explaines the delay. Mike.

Hands shakin' too much, lack of nicotine? You're right it is a disgusting habit, keep it up, it does get easier!!

I was planning to try and give up when I next went off for a week's sailing - but my girlfriend and I sensibly keep a packet each in our emergency grab bag; wouldn't want to be in peril on the sea without some snouts, after all. So I think I'm going to have to give up before then (shudder).

Good luck - if you smoke the same amount as I do, you'll be £1,700 per annum better off. For me, that's enough to keep Crystal in a marina for 12 months!

Off to buy some patches,

You can do it. Keep it up! I stopped on June 4th 2003 after 41 years. There were 2 reasons:~

1. I was so pi##ed off with myself after years of telling myself I had to stop and getting really depressed that I couldn't.

2. I really want to sail as much as possible and my fitness (or lack of it) was jeopardising that.

Good luck, keep the faith, when you're over the worst you will be so pleased with yourself.

Cheers

Brian

I've never smoked in my life. On that basis can I claim to my wife that I've saved £1700 a year that can now be spent on the boat? ;-)

Keep on trying ! in some months you'll be able to smell and taste things you forgot since your childhood : a real pleasure !
I went down from about 1 + 1/2 pack to 0 overnight in 1986. Last year Doc told me that my lungs were as good as new !
(in my case a bit of jogging helped a lot but was horrible at the beguinning). Good luck !

Yep its worth the effort .. i gave up 20+ per day to zero 10 years ago after 20 years of smoking .. hard to begin with but well worth it ..

That constant feeling of nausea - and probably will puke if I break into a trot - will go quickly. The pains in the legs took a little longer. The money wasn't so much a factor ; I don't seeem to be better off. My main motivation was knowing that I got NOTHING out of it and had been a mug for long enough.
Keep it up. Try just a day at a time.

Stick with it Mick, it's worth it, I quit eight years ago, and then again 3 years ago and hopefully this time for good. The first attempt failed because I got my sense of smell and taste back while I was in Delhi! It was too much of an attack on my senses so I lunged for the Dunhills.

Re:20 - 20 - 20.....

.... Thats me - 20 a day for 20 years up to 20 years ago. It really is worth the effort! Forget about tomorrow or next week at this stage. You're just not going to light up for the next 5 minutes. When you get there - well you can cope with another 5 minutes - just about!

About 6 weeks or so in when its getting a bit better is the biggest danger 'Just one wont make any difference now - I've got it cracked' No you havent - and one will lead to just one more.... and before you know your back on 20 'one mores' a day.

So I guess thats another 20 for me - I must have given up at least 20 times before I finally made it. And each time it was that 'just one wont matter' that tripped me up. Until someone (now my wife) pointed out what i was doing...!

ye gods - did I really go through all that, that many times? SWMBO says I did...

There must be some Scots blood in me - I put a pack of 14 fags on the fire: - I wasn't going to waste THAT little lot by buying some more!

All the best - you will never regret again giving it up as much as you do now!

go on treat yourself!

That's what always used to get me, I'd give up successfully for around two weeks and then I'd think, 'well you've done all the hard work, why don't you treat yourself to a fag? You deserve it.' It's usually happened in a pub when I was surrounded by smokers and was always the start of me smoking again.

Re: go on treat yourself!

Giving up is dead easy. I just decided to do it one afternoon and stuck with it, no problem at all. Mind you, I had just come from a meeting where it had been confirmed that I had Laryngial Cancer. Would respectively suggest that doing the former is much better than having the latter, so keep at it. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: go on treat yourself!

Gave up smoking for 18 months walked miles every day felt fit enough .... but not quite right ...started again couple weeks ago back to 20 a day and feel so much better... its bad for your phisical health no question and very much out of fashion for those who care about that sort of thing...but have never read anything about smoking and depression and for me there is a definate conection....sorry I,m not being supportive of your desire to quite but reckon an honest effort to cut back be far better for all concerned

Re: go on treat yourself!

Depression is an other business !
If you're ready to stop there's only one way to succeed : X to 0 overnight.
I tried to alloy me 10 a day for instance, the moment 1 was finished... I was waiting for the next, unable to do anything : That's Slavery ! not Freedom...

Re: go on treat yourself!

I totally agree. I stopped a number of years ago, 60 a day Marlboro Reds to nothing on an impulse overnight. Next morning and onwards, I had no cravings whatsoever and even insisted that smokers do so in my flat.

Lasted 4 months until I stupidly accepted a cigar after a charity dinner. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Remember that if you're flying longhaul, you do without a fag for 15-20 hours without too much problem. It's all in the mind.

(Now where's me fags..............................oh there they are on top of that book "The Only Way To Stop Smoking Permanently" by Alan Carr.
