Indeed. And there was a time when to see which way the wind was coming from, we had was a stupid rotating pointy thing, and you had to look up the mast to see which way it was going. No wait a minute, that was last week on a sailboat..

Didn't the needle get jiggled about by the motion of the oarsmen on that galleon of yours? and doesn't the Roman shields down the side affect the compass deviation?

When I started Pontius was a bristol channel pilot! and we didnt need names for our boats, we knew each other.
