Just received an email from a sailing buddy.

EAST (East Anglian Sailing Trust) provides sailing opportunities for disabled and visually impaired people. It desperately needs better facilities and has put in an application for £50,000 of Lottery funding. The project will be featured on Anglia TV between 6.00 and 6.30 pm on Monday 22 November. The public are to be asked to choose between this project and another charitable one. (Sorry don't know what the other one is.)

The phone number to call doesn't get released until Monday. I will post it here on Monday once I know it. Voting is between 9.00 am and midnight.

For details of EAST see www.east-anglian-sailing-trust.org.uk.

I just followed this link and i can't believe what this world has come to. Both charities are clearly very worthwhile. Have we really reached a situation where disadvantaged groups have to compete with each other for public votes. Obviously we have. I'm really disgusted by this. No reflection on either charity which are both obviously worth supporting

I agree entirely. I'm sure both causes have put in a great deal of effort to get to 'the final' and that they are both worthy causes. It is, unfortunately, the world we live in. Too many things to spend money on, not enough of it to go around.

I disagree with you. The profit from the National Lottery is huge and if you buy a ticket then you expect a good proportion to go to worthwhile causes. I have never thought that the recipients would depend on a public vote. Both charities are good causes. Whycant they have half each?

I don't make the rules.

So I don't need the flack.

No-one is forcing anybody to make the phone call.

If you want to phone, phone. If you don't, don't.

Similarly, don't whinge that good causes don't get the support they deserve if when a system is put in place which allows you to support, you just find fault with it.

The TV programme is nothing to do with me. I have no connection with EAST. I don't have shares in any phone companies. I am just passing on information which has been given to me. I have neither applauded the TV programme, nor even the Lottery funding. I have not even made a big deal over the work that EAST does. I've simply passed information on.

I made it quite clear from the outset that it was to be a competition between two causes. Since both causes have made the final, one can assume they are both worthy causes. Vote for the other cause if you like.

Carry on being disgusted if you want to. I doubt it will change the world.

Both are good causes. Why they have to compete for funding is a mystery to me.
