hello,

Iam looking into producing a range of high quality fibreglass componants specifically for marine applications.

I understand that grp products would not be very popular with classic boat owners where oiled or varnished hardwood would be more the thing but could i ask for your opinion or comments on one in particular that may be of interest especially with older boats.
This is a grp vented gas locker one and two 4.5 kg bottle variations with provisions for holding the bottles securely and a sucure lid. The locker/box could be mounted externally or internally in an existing ply locker.

Thanks for any comments..

Martin.

Yes I have a 65 year old wooden boat but I am not ipso facto agin fibreglass components - my boat's cockpit is built of epoxy, glass cloth and filler over marine ply but it could have been a separate moulding.

I have no interest in a gas bottle locker as I don't use gas - I use paraffin and solid fuel.

A shower base tray might interest me!

I would have grave reservations about having a container for gas bottles manufactured from something as fiercely combustible as fibreglass. While the glass doesn't burn, the polyester resin is highly combustible. While wood does burn, it takes quite a bit of heat to start it off, and then it burns fairly slowly. Back to the drawing board, I'm afraid!

Let's take a few steps back. In most modern boats, the gas container is going to be in a fibreglass container of some sort. Better to be in a purpose designed container. If a wooden container ignites, it will burn with the best, especiallly when plenty of gas is involved <s>

I'm thinking about building a wooden gas locker to stand in my wheelhouse - with a leakproof grp interior vented over the side. I think most wooden boat owners take a pragmatic approach to materials - you don't see many laminated ply radar scanner cases.
But I think you can already buy grp gas lockers 'off the shelf' - will yours be cheaper?
