Your Boating History!

oldmanofthehills,

how on earth did your Anderson sink at her mooring - settled on the mooring sinker ?

I know of one which was taken to then based in the Med' and had a very unfortunate time trying to explore the Danube in flood, she wasn't sunk just damaged, her retired injured crew gave up and sold her there for beans, no contact with new owner.

oldmanofthehills,

March 8th 2008. Waves 100ft high over the cliffs at Sennen, down along. Not so bad in Somerset, maybe F9, but mooring trot very vulnerable to westerlies at high tide as boats blow up the bank away from the keel soft spot so sit at odd angles. Boat checked late the night before as we came off flight from France. Maybe the wind had blown her over as she dried and she failed to pickup with waves being driven onto her gunwales, maybe mooring chained snagged so she failed to rise promptly to the tide. Who knows? Insurance surveyor said "never any serious trouble with Bristol Channel sailors at sea but the tidal moorings can catch you out - if you were thinking of selling just take the insurance offer for loss and sell her on to let someone else sort her out". Some one did but then successors did nothing with her which is a shame.

Over 50 years I have owned the following.
A home built plywood 16ft cabin cruiser on a caravan chassis trailer.
16ft Marina GT (Twin 33 Johnsons)
Shetland Suntrip.
Burland 26 Canal Cruiser Which I part exchanged at a profit for .
Nauticus 27 Canal Cruiser as above
Conway 26 Cabin Cruiser (twin volvo 140) which cost £4400 and I got £8000 for in px against a
Moody 30 which I Part exchanged for a Princess 33 (big mistake as it had the slowest engines. and due to the
boat seller falsely selling me an ex-demo boat as a new one I got my money back and the
Moody 30 which I sold at a profit (wish I had it now)
Then bought a Nauticat 33 which I sold

A gap of 15 years then a Drascombe Lugger
A Guy Couch 24ft French Fishing Boat.
A 24ft Skibsplast
A 24 ft Colvic Watson with a 50hp BMC diesel and you cant get engine parts for(Thornycroft 50)

I am now looking for a Trailer Sailer with Bilge Keels

Main boat was bought in 1935 by my Grandfather. I took over sole control about 30 years ago.

Other small dayboats, rowing boats and dinghies come and go.

Am I unusual in only having 3 boats in over 40 years?

Not so unusual I think. We have owned a GP14 for about a year (first and last wooden boat!), then a Wayfarer for 18 years, then a Sadler 29 for 15 years, and now a Scanyacht 391 for 4 years and counting.

Excluding family owned boats.

Firefly
Laser
2 x International 14s
Umpteen windsurfers
Enterprise
Merlin-Rocket
Beneteau First Class 8
Albin Ballad
Contessa 33
S&S Swan 40 (big mistake)
X-302
Current fleet: Oyster Heritage (in bits) and a Flying Fifteen.

It looks like a win for the Firefly then. What a great boat. Fun to sail, and no lifejacket required.

Dad’s boats - after the first one I was the only child interested:
Kestrel - clinker built 22 footer - 1971-74 - Solent
Maurice Griffiths one-off centre cockpit 24 footer triple keeler -1983-87 East and South Coast
Mine:
Westerly GK24 - (his, then co-owned then mine) 1987-1995 - English Channel, French Atlantic coast - best boat ever
Beneteau First 30E - 1995-1999 - English Channel, French and Spanish Atlantic coast
2000-2004 chartered and did deliveries and fell in love with catamarans - Caribbean and one cross-Atlantic
2004-2018 Westerly GK24 - South Coast
2010-present - Jeanneau 42.2 - Eastern Greece to currently in Lanzarote - current dilemma is work for longer and get that elusive catamaran or keep sailing 3 months a year then more in the current boat

The people who can fit into a Firefly are the same who can fit into the back of a 2+2 sports car, an amputee dwarf. I got rid of my leaky POS as soon as I could.

Swapped it with my landlord for 2 weeks rent and a painting. IRRC he gave the thing away to the local sea scouts, who probably used it for 5 November.

Silhouette - 1 year
International Folkboat - 10 years
Contessa 32 - 25 years...

The Silhouette was just an experiment to see if I wanted a keel boat.
The International Folkboat is a deeply lovely thing. Good deckspace, big main, large cockpit, speed, grace, bendy rig, and enough accommodation for coal miner's canary. After a day out you come back and kiss the mother in law.

Aircraft carrier-----is that yours too?

Started 22 years ago with a fin keel Leisure 17, which I loved. Moved up to a Trident 24, which I didn’t like. Have owned a Jouet 950 for the last 15 years and love it.
