...but the first version of it, which attracted loads of signatures, was canned when Mrs May called the June 2017 general election.

It thus has had to be relaunched, as all previous signatures disappeared down the plughole.

Currently it stands at about 7000. It needs to get over 10000 to get a government response.

Done, 7984 now - sadly it seems unlikely to reach the necessary 10,000 for a government response, only 15 days left.

We've passed the 9000 mark, less than a thousand to go before.

Why are we so keen to get to 10,000 signatures?

At that number the government is required to make a written reply. We are not naive about the sort of reply we are likely to get, drafted by a civil service already strained to the limit by the complexities of the preparations for Brexit. Nevertheless, whatever the reply, it gives us a peg upon which to hang the next phase of our campaign for a multi-stakeholder consultation to find a solution. The hazard presented by poorly marked static fishing gear has not gone away and people of good heart will continue to want to do something about it.

The deadline for 10,000 is 12 March, so anything you can do to get us past the 10,000 hurdle quickly would be welcome. Sailing club forum? Marina notice board? Twitter? Facebook? People in the boatyard?

I remember a senior civil servant telling me that he loved these online petitions. They could send one reply out to everyone who contacted them rather than wasting time on individual replies. Hopefully, as you say though, it will be a peg.
